DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Would you ride on this? Or should I replace?
I will be going to a race in Dover next month, riding with a couple buddies. And it's going to be a 3-hr ride, one way.

Opinions?

I can't tell with the clutch basket in the way.
What happened? Something grenade?

Chef ,
You see the smashed piece to the left of the Screw?
It just looks smashed up, and wrong to me.

The ones on eBay don't look that way...
Maybe nothing is wrong?

i think he is referring to part no.24. the shift shaft itself. the part on the end which ratchets the gears up and down looks like it has been damaged. probably ok but easy enough to remove and check for sure

Yeah, Im talking about the piece dead-center of the photos.

It just looks bashed-up...no cracks, but the bike runs fine though!

Just curious if anyone else has seen this before!

yep, looks like something got caught up in there for sure, what is the story, why is the cover off and when did it happen?
Ideally you want to replace it, but if there are no dramas with the bike and it is not cracked or looks like it will fail. I say, sod it, ride the thing.

Since that part is n/a from Suzuki, I'd take it out and have someone put a weld on that spot. Just for peace of mind.
Last thing you need is to be stuck in first gear, 150 miles from home.

In an 4v 1100 motor I had some clutch discs shatter once. Some of the pieces got behind the clutch basket and chewed up the engine cases and shift forks resulting in some similar, but worse, looking damage than yours.

In your case, I assume that your clutch did NOT fail, and that everything is in working order (you don't have any pieces laying around in there do you?). So I would assume it could be the result of one of two things: a) somewhere in your bikes past it had a clutch failure similar to mine, or; b) the shift shaft retaining clip on the other side of the engine came off and is allowing the shift shaft to "walk" and contact the back of the clutch basket.

Either way, its probably been like that for a while (a long while if it was a clutch failure with one of the PO's) so I would think that it should be OK for a while yet to come. I would try and determine what exactly happened to it, then put replacing/repairing it on my "to-do-list", and not "bang" the gears when shifting until I had a chance to fix it. But that's just my opinion.

Again, I would pull the shaft, straighten the damaged part, weld it and grind it to make it look new again and re-install.
Or, find the same shaft with that part in good condition from another engine.
I would not be taking a long trip KNOWING that it is in that condition myself.
You guys can do what you like. I would not be riding it far.

Eric
