    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hello all you GS maniacs! I just wanted to give a hearty and sincere THANK YOU for all of you who answer these technical questions and help people like me figure these GSs out. Although I didn't ask very many questions, I did take the time to search and read the wealth of information and knowledge on this website, and boy did I learn a lot, and learn it quickly!

About a month ago I knew absolutely nothing about motorcycles. I used to be a helicopter mechanic, I'm a pilot, and I know my fair share about cars, but motorcycles were completely foreign. Then I bought a 1980 GS550L on eBay, drove over 1,200 miles round trip to pick her up, only to get her home and find out all the things wrong with her. In the past month the front and rear brakes were changed and bled, carbs rebuilt, stator & R/R replaced, and all the little things like cleaning electrical connections, running tests, vacuum petcock woes, etc...

All of this was accomplished successfully because of you guys here at GSR! Just a few hours ago I took my very first motorcycle for our first significant ride together (50 miles) and it was AWESOME! She runs great for being as old as I am and guess what else..? SHE CHARGES WITH ABSOLUTELY NO ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS ANYMORE!!

What a great day. The hard work, money spent, waiting, and frustration all paid off today on that ride! I think this is the beginning of a wonderful friendship.

It is amazing how all those hours of frustration and hard work just disappear when you are on the seat of your bike on a ride. Congratulations to you for having the fortitude to hang in there and see your project to completion.

Keep er between the ditches and I hope you have many years of riding pleasure.

Dean, 1 thing you will soon realize - 50 miles is NOT a significant ride on these old bikes. :twisted: They LOVE to be ridden, and ridden and ridden. :D

yeek--i used to work on rotorheads for sikorsky.. Makes overhead cams look simple. You had the correct background for sure with workink on choppers. :D :D

That's funny scotty, I've busted knuckles with the best of 'em on Sikorski rotors too... working SH-60 B&Fs in the Navy with HS-10 & HSL-42. Man it's a small world...

One way of looking at this is if this site saved you time and money, then you really should contribute something, even if its $5 or even less.
Its not about if the site has money in reserve or not, its about saying thanks to the editors and members here who helped you fix your bike. :)
Its about giving back, and yes, this will help insure others will have a place to find help in the future.
The editors give a lot of their time for you.
The members take the time to help you.
You save time, frustration and sometimes a lot of money from this help.
Many members have said "what would I have done without the info I found at the GSR?" Chances are you would have wasted your time trying to fix things and the bike would end up leaning against a wall someplace.
Well, I'll stop my preaching. But just do the right thing...make a small contribution. :)
 
Dean, Sounds like it took a lot of effort for that first 50 mile ride, also sounds like you enjoyed it.

In addition to the techical help, have you seen the "meeting place" here on the GSR? Keep an eye on that, and maybe in the spring you can ride your newfound GS over from southern Illinois to southern Indiania and meet some other GSers and have quite a ride.

I am refereing to the Brown County ride that they have had for last few years. I went this spring, was great, nearly 20 GSs all in a row. Was guys from Chicago, Indiania and the sourdinding states of MI, KY, MO, IL ectera. JonR was one of the organizers, he had a 550 also. Although JonR has moved to PA, I understand it will be organized again this spring.
