Hey guys.
You can buy all kinds of chemicals for rust, but this is what I do and it is FREE.
For rust in the tank, go outside and find some gravel, 1/4" is best with sharp edges (like shale).
Pour about 1/2 a gallon in with water. Hang the tank on some rope off a tree branch with the cap hole up, and start shaking the hell out of it, it'll take a while, but I've found nothing that works better, and I've had my share.
When you're satisfied, wash the tank out thoroughly, pour some gas inside and swirl it around to diplace the water, empty, then pour some motor oil and swirl for storage.
For the outside, use a wire brush wheel to take off the rust without harming the metal. If you just want to store the tank, spray it with cheap walmart primer, a can of 'aircraft stripper removes it easily.
Hope this helps
