    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Oversize oil drain plug

I had to replace my oil drain plug with an oversize M14. The plug is about a 1/4" or so longer than the magnetic plug I replaced. It appears there is plenty of clearance, but I wanted to check with the pros on the board before I started the bike. Any issues with the slightly longer plug?

i put one of these in a couple of monhs ago and i haven't had any problems with it at all.
 
Thanks for the info. I used a rubber washer with the oversized plug and I'm still getting a slight drip. I'm going to try the washer that is rubber with a metal outer ring. I figure the rubber is distorting some when I tighten up the plug.

You'd be better off with a copper or aluminum washer. With rubber you don't ever really get the plug tight which can lead to leaks.

I've been running an oversize oil drain plug on my 850 for a year now with no problems. Used the stock rubber gasket, it was a real tight fit over the oversize plug. Also the plug I used had a flange on the bolt head. Got mine at Autozone. It was about a 1/4 in longer than stock.
 
When I picked up the rubber and metal washer at the parts store (which I have not installed yet), they had several types of oil plug washers. Solid copper, solid aluminum, "crush-type" copper, fiber, plastic/nylon and a few others it seems like. I do remember the rubber gasket that I used originally (that's leaking now) wasn't a tight fit over the bolt threads. It came with the oversize plug.

The oversize plug itself is a nice tight fit into the pan. I'm still confused about what type of plug and gasket combo will eliminate my drip.

For a good seal you want a smooth surface on both the bolt and the pan to pinch the washer between. Even with good sealing surfaces the washer still needs to crush a little and conform to assure no leak path is present. You want a firm material for the washer so it will crush a little but still allow the bolt to reach a decent torque level so it won't loosen later. Copper is a popular choice but aluminum and plastic are popular as well. Rubber washers should be avoided since it's hard to get a good clamp on the bolt. O-rings are different since they are usually trapped inside a groove or such so the bolt itself is able to reach torque.
