My paint seems kinda dull, almost kinda like a satin finish. I'm thinking too much air in the paintgun? Well, I'm gonna finish up my stripes and clear it real good and hope for the best. :dancing:

If that's just a base coat paint, then it's supposed to look like that, no worry. The clear will bring out the shine.

Yea what he said nvr2old that is. If it's a base coat clear coat then the clear coat is the shine. Paint looks good and consistant.

Thanks guys, saved my sanity more than anything. nvr2old, wow, just wow. looked thru your pics and your site and still wow. So, I went ahead and did the stripes I had in mind. I took my new sidecover decal and color matched the gold from the GS part as close as my eye would allow and did my interpretation of what was in my noggin and voila.... Just don't laugh too loud. :o Not too bad for a rookie huh?

And yeah, my bike has four sides that need side covers. LOL nah, got two sets and wanted to make them look right just in case. ;)

Shooting clear tomorrow so don't kill me over that.

Thank you Steve. I have come to respect yours as a voice of substance. Even though you haven't asked for it. I am actually using a Duplicolor PaintShop Lacquer (performance red) and the rattlecan Gold Metallic ColorMatch stuff and then a two part urethane clear over the top to make it fuel-resistanter than lacquer. :p Not going for a complete resto on this one but man, the journey is almost as fun as the destination. I'm kind of dreading being done when I get there. :( I guess that means I need another right?

Looks really good, I like it, be sure to keep us up to date with more pics as the project progresses.

Looking good.:) Can't wait to see how that rattle can urethane turns out. Don't worry about getting the clear to lay down super smooth since you can color sand and polish if there are any dry looking spots, or a run or two. Just make sure you get enough down to give yourself something to work with and you should be good.

Decidedly different, but looks good.

+1 fer sher

Nice vintage look to it. If it's for the bike in your sig then it'll look right for the period just after avacado and harvest wheat and just before hunter green and brass. You're gonna do your helmet to match, right?

Oh, I'm not using a rattlecan clear. The only rattlecan stuff was for the gold. I didn't want to buy a quart just to do the stripes. I got a two part clear at Sherwin Williams Automotive. It was actually recommended on the Duplicolor Forum to shoot a urethane clear over the PaintShop lacquer to provide more gas resistance.

What did you think of the Paint Shop stuff, how well did it spray, etc? I'm getting ready to use it on a bike here.
I want to see it all back together when you are finished.

Well, it was my first time using any sort of paint sprayer other than a can. I'm also using the $15 HF HVLP (non-HVLP ) gun. I didn't really know what I was looking for which is why I started this thread and ended up using 1 3/4 quarts for everything. Ends up being good because I always paint stuff too thin anyway. I used the gun settings that rustybronco suggested here http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/showpost.php?p=1233847&postcount=1 and it worked pretty well. I guess the real trick to making the PaintShop work is to put a good urethane clear over it. They make a clear but it's lacquer too.

ikantbreave,

How crudded up was the HF 47016 when you took it apart?
also, what did you think of it after you sprayed with it a bit?

Nice job. I like the color combo.

I might have done one set of the side covers without the stripe so you could have a choice between the two.

Can't wait to see the finished product.

I like the look. It's unique, but tasteful. Good job so far. Also, be aware that the finished clear will still need to be wet sanded and buffed to get that mirror finish we want.

Thanks for all the kudos!

Thanks for all the kudos!

Thanks folks.

rustybronco, that gun was just as gunked up as you said. Do they pack it in plaster of paris or what? Scraped all that junk outta there and cleaned it real good and it seemed to spray well. The fan adjustment was kinda fidgety, every time my thumb snuck up there it seemed to be open all the way. Other than that, I really did like it and seemed to get the hang of the adjustments quickly.

ReTread, I wish I'd thought of that before. That's a great idea. One set of side covers are getting the decals and one blank so maybe that'll do for now. Definitely somethin to think about the next time I paint it. Or the next bike. :D

ddaniels, the clear I got even says to wetsand and buff after 48 hours so I'll be doing that for sure. Is 1500 grit too rough or should I look for 2000 or more?

LOL, my color ninja bride just might kill me for being too "matchy". :p:p

Getting there

Getting there

Well, the clear came out okay. I must have put one of the decals in the clear too soon, sprayed it again and it kinda floated away on me. Overall, I'm happy with the rest of it. I'm going to let it cure up per instructions and wetsand/buff. I wish I would have known that the urethane clear sprays like corn syrup and makes EVERYTHING sticky. My beard, the drop cloths, the air hose, my goggles. Been a good learning experience anyway. :D
