Paint for a '79 GS1000S Wes Cooley replica

Here is the instrument panel. A little over 19K miles. The clock and the oil temp gauge don't work. I understand that is fairly common.

Last pic, from the other side. I think that these are factory wheels. I need to strip the paint and clean them up this winter. Gas shocks on the back, which I guess aren't stock either. I like the ride though and the color scheme matches the rest of the bike.

Those tiny flaws can be easily repaired. That bike looks sweet.
It would be foolish to repaint, especially with different colors.

140mph speedo indicates it's a 79 model.
The drilled discs, now seeing them up close, are not stock.
80 did have drilled discs, but a different pattern to the hole spacing.
As to the clock and oil temp, clock yea they do go.
The oil temp is usually disabled due to the addition of an oil cooler.

It looks like aftermarket paint, as the stock S is a lighter shade of blue.
Many were painted with a darker shade.
The wheels have been painted, this could explain the different shade or darker color.

Gday you might be interested in what ive done with mine. I liked the stock look but added a few period sponsor decals as per wes-cooley , plus a bit of my own touch. you will find more pics of my bike under my Gs's resurection posted on this sight. Anyway enjoy your bike and remember when it comes to your bike its an extension of you and therefore you should paint it and play with it as such.

Very nice indeed. Mine is in the basement now. I found someone I work with who does painting in his off time. I've got a lot of little stuff to do, again, mostly just clean-up work. I'll try to post as a go along.

By the way, what exhaust system is that on yours? If you have it fabricated?

I liked the blue and white Wes Cooley theme so much that I painted my 1980 850g that colour. I think the rims that you painted would look better black then blue. Ted

Gday again. The exhauhst is a formula1 and it sounds great. thinking about making an extension to rise it though. As for the paint I went to my local auto paint shop and they colour matched it for me. As you can see I still have a bit to do to finish it. Your bike looks great by the way. (except Im not sure about the paint on the wheels!). Anyway looking forward to seeing your finished bike (if they ever are entirely finshed LOL.)

I plan to strip the wheels this winter and repaint them to look like the original factory version. I agree, the blue just doesn't work for me. On the plus side, there appears to be no corrosion or damage to them, so I think that they will clean up nicely. I think that I'm going to have the frame and swingarm powder coated. I may get the wheels done at the same time. I wouldn't think that masking them off would be too difficult.

Thanks for post, by the way. This site is an amazing source of information for a newbie like me. I've got a lot to learn, but it is a lot less imposing now than it was 2-3 months ago.

If the paint on the blue rims is in good shape I woud just paint over them. On my rims I used Krylon semi gloss. Masking them is easy using 1/4" wide green painters tape. It's just the right width for the ribs. Ted

Thanks, I appreciate the advice. Unfortunately, I need to get rid of the blue as well. But the masking tip is a good one. I didn't expect it to be that easy.
