    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Absolutely correct, and I agree with you....

BUT

the inside of the helmet is what matters, the foam and lining is what has gone to crap more than likely, it's probably crumbling and falling apart and has no safety value left in it.....

he might as well go and get a construction helmet and put it on and ride around with that....

I had a helmet, sat in the closet, in it's bag, and was not used for many years, and it was falling apart on the inside as stated above, it was promptly thrown out and replaced with a new one....

sorry but my head is worth more to me than a few hundred bucks, I would rather not ride, than have something on my head that does not offer me the maximum protection I can get.

but hey to each his own......

was just checking the inside liners out on both helmets, the bell has seen better days and the other helmet's foam and inside seem to be intact. i just ordered a new helmet for me and will be getting her a new on when money allows. i found a helmet on ebay and the seller is close to my dad in california. got my new helmet for 25 bucks and having my dad ship it out for me. thanks for the honesty. i will be still painting this one for now and looking into getting her a new helmet later. i just got out of the service and the pay difference is a taking time to get use to.
 
Slightly OT: What would offer more protection, a full helmet past the 5 year mark? or a brand new half helmet?

i know the bell is about 30yrs old and its a 3/4 open face, my wifes is a 16yr old 1/2 helemt. i am starting to think neither is a good idea to use except for paint practice

If it's a half helmet you can pick up those pretty cheap.

Good idea to practice painting on the old helmets. I like the idea of custom helmet paint and I wouldn't want to paint on my expensive helmet with no practice.
 
 
the old bell helmet wont get tossed. it has some meaning to it. my grandpa used it on his old trail 90 honda around town in the early 80s and my dad use to wear it when he went drag racing in the late 80's and early 90's. i use to wear it when ,my dad and i would go out in his muscle cars and cruise. i thought we were always going fast. lol the half helmet my wife uses was mine when i was 12 and i am 28 now. so they have had good lives i guess
 
GK, you are right, the foam inside would be the problem with time, sorry, that did not come out right.
But I would take it for granted that if one where refurbing a helmet, a new set of inners would be a no brainer, a lot cheaper than buying a new lid and restores it back to original spec.
I for one, would not be able to toss a five grand Shoei or Arai in the trash, You okes are lucky, things not too spendy in your corner of the world.
Sorry if it came across a bit harsh, not intended.
 
A full face wins every time, no question, I would never ride with anything less.

I just gave away an Arai full face (seven years old) to a kid who was "too broke to buy a helmet". I told him he needed to replace it asap.

I haven't had a half helmet since my Buco police helmet from the late sixties.
That was the only helmet I could even buy that was "half-decent", where I lived at the time.
Around here, especially summer, I am one of the few with ANY helmet :eek:
