DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Steve, all replies were digested and as it turned out, all were incorporated at some stage in the proceedings. Your suggestion did take the prize as it turned out, and credit should have been judiciously apportioned last night, had I not injudiciously swallowed two treble (or was it quadruple) gin and tonics . . . however, I am prepared to remedy the oversight!

Would you like the phillips head screws, the old screen, or both?

Nah, just let him be pious. ;)

You guys had better be careful. My next job assignment just might take me to the west coast
(if it's still there after the rain this week) and I might just have to come visit you.

OOOHHHHH I'm scared

It has, as you can see in the picture, the lip of the screen folded over at regular intervals, unlike the original screen, which fit over the rim of the sump like a lid fits on a jar.

This is the correct part, by the way. I did some research* and discovered that the original design was superseded some years later. (part no. 16520-45000 by 16520-45010) my question is, from an engineering perspective, is there some reason for the design change? My only guess would be that it creates small channels for the oil to flow more quickly back into the pan . . .

Anyone gonna answer this question ? I would be inclined to flip the new screen over and install it with the 6 flange crimps pointing down.....

Disregard if thats what youre doing.

Any why would that be? Looks to me like the side with the crimps gos up against the pickup tube.

I'm pretty sure the crimps would face away from the mounting surface.

Get a better tool!

Get a better tool!

Ok...
My wife contacted a bud of mine to get me a gift for Christmas and I recieved a FULL set of MAATCO screwdrivers.
NEVER would i believe the difference that precision fit has helped in taking apart two bikes and a jeep. The Japanese Industrial crosshead is indeed a bit different and it truly helps a successful repair to have more confidence removing those suckers! I almost always replace w/ hex head.
I am 53 yrs old and have eaten away a ton of screwheads. I wish the best tools on everybody as well as eternally good lead/acid batteries!
Oh! These suckers fit guns much better also where you REALLy don't want to slip!

Bonanza Dave, thanks for your reply. I hadn't considered flipping it, because I was too fixated on the old screen and its design -- but it makes perfect sense. When I dry fitted the new screen with the crimps facing the sealing surface, the screen began to deform as the three socket-head cap screws were tightened . . .

It's still raining . . . I've got the new sump screen in, and the oil pan, with shiny cooling fins, is bolted on over a new gasket. The improved setup, experts agree, is good for 3 to 5 more horsepower . . . onto the cam chain tensioner and oil sending unit . . .

each had the kind of oil seepage you might expect from 32 years of service, and since the carburetors are off for a rebuild and rejet, easy to get to . . . just waiting for the new gaskets and O rings to arrive . . . and maybe for the rain to stop . . .
