A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

The petcock on my motorcycle has a kind of filter on it. Will it hurt if I run an additional fuel filter? Will it starve the carbs?

I assume that you are talking about the fuel screen that covers the petcock tube inside the gas tank. If this is the case, then yes, you should add an in-line fuel filter, and no, it won't affect the carbs.

The in tank filter is all you need. an inline filter can cause fuel starvation problems & not recomended. If you do use one make sure it is for MC use
NOT an auto type.

hmmm :? I added an in-line m/c fuel filter about 2 months ago. No problems at all...

I know what you mean, ddaum... I used to slot in fuel filters into my bikes as a matter of course, because we all want to keep our carbs and engines in tip-top condition.

But SqDancerLynn1 is right: you are just asking for the dreaded 'vapor lock' problems with an inline filter, especially when the weather warms up. I have found this out for myself on a variety of machines, the hard way.

If you do a search here on the GS Resources, you'll find many reports of 'mysterious' fuel starvation problems that kind of evaporate (sorry about the pun) when the inline fuel filter is removed.

Mike.

Hi... i'm jumping in here, cause this something I need to learn too.

To "tfb" or whoever can explain this... you say watch out for a vapor lock problem, especially in warm weather.

What do you mean exactly?
Please define "vapor lock".
How does this happen?
Why would it happen with an in-line fuel filter?

Thanks

I must disagree here with Lynn. I am now using an automotive in line filter on my 1150 and it works great. My tank has a some rust in it and it kept getting into the carbs and causing them to flood. I used a Nissan filter and it cured my problems 100%. I think the automotive filters are superior to anything else because they have to filter fuel to the injectors. I won't say that any automotive filter will work but this one did a great job for me. I didn't want to coat my tank because of the time involved and possibly ruining the stock paint. If you have room (no airbox on my bike) this one works great. Mike J

I run them on all my bikes and have never had an issue in 23+ years. But, I will not dispute the possibility of what others like Lynn have said and I am very sure there is merit to it. Weigh your own options.
