If you wait long enough and look hard enough, you'll find used ones on E-bay. I found 3 over a 9 month period, picking them up for about $25 or so.
But........ I still had to work on them to keep them from leaking.

Here is a photo of the external air mixture screw with some of the white powder resisdue when the srcrew is removed their will be more powder almost like pipe tape have to remove the jets to remove the screw and clean if read this correctly

I will also psot photos of the tank Pingle and petcock later on

Shouldint the petcock not allow fuel to flow into the cylinders if the floats are closed is thier any way around the problem?

All that white stuff is on the screw is the paint they used to seal it, or show that it was in this position. We're not supposed to mess with those screws as they are set forever at the factory (yeah, right!) Do you see that little indent on the carb next to the screw. That's factory imprinted to mark the original location of the screw slot (really!). It's usually about 1.5 turns out. Feel better now.
Should you mess with those screws, you got to get all that white paint out of there, once you see what they're set at.
Get this, and this is very, very, very important. When you screw in those screws, do not over do it, lightly seated. They have long tips that break off in holes you don't ever have to want to get to, nevermind try to get the broken tip out.
Remember, ever so lightly seated!

I'll probably order the PINGEL (I'm in the habit of turning fuel flow off anyways --lawn mowers, etc) then get a rebuild kit for my stock one for sh*ts and giggles !
Thanks all

Thank you for the welcome, I have seen your welcome post and have been on your site extensively thus far. I really do appreciate the time and effort you gents put into these sites, it sure makes owning these unique old beasts a lot easier !

Searching and reading more on this site, and looking at some pics, my petcock looks like a 78 gs1000e (two tiered filter). And I seem to recall the PO stating he swapped the gas tank from a 78.
I'm guessing bolt hole spacing is the same for 79 and I shan't worrry ?

'78 and '79 petcock were the same. The '78 had a small inset running down the center of each side of the tank (the black ones had a white stripe "skunk"). The '79 had smooth sides. The '80 looked identical to the '79 but had the lever-less petcock and even spaced holes from the screen where '78 and '79 were offset.

My tank has the 'skunk' stripes and small insets, she is a 78 tank.
I finally decided to pull my head out of my arse and figure this out. I took my digital caliper out, bolt hole center spacing is 44mm just like everyone else (duh).
Problem solved, thanks all !

My '79 GS1000 for some reason had the '80 style petcock that has no lever on it, it must be turned with a screw driver. I tried a different style petcock that was specified for a '79 and it didn't fit. Maybe my tank is off an '80, I don't know. Anyway, I replaced it with the same style from oldbikebarn, I want to say it was like $60 shipped.

I have a 79 1000L also and it had the same petcock. apparently it was made specifically for the 79 L. at least that's what I'm going with. I got one just like it from z1enterprises.com and love it. @zedman, give z1 a call I'm sure they could get you what you need.

Thanks for the info, I just ordered my pingel and adaptor plate ! I'll post how it all turns out when I get her done.
Thanks all. Cheers.

For some reason the measurement for the hole spacing appeared to be 44mm ordered the 1702C adapter plate By a quirk I ordered the 46MM Adaptor plate which is 46MM

Got all the parts today went out tried to install the 1702C adapter plate lined up the holes on the Gasket and cut the hole.

Check the fit of the adapter plate before you do anything! Why, glad you asked :>)

When I drilled my holes I used the 46mm Plate (center hole) and not the 44MM adapter plate which has the offset petcock Hole Lucky for me I had slightly oversized the hole

As they say measure twice cut once got lucky on the offset hole as mine was tiny bit larger round

The 44MM fit perfect, will post a pdf soon as I can figure out how to write in the details on the photos taken

Interesting, thanks for the info, I will be sure to check my measurements before assuming all is well !
Cheers
