DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

So a few months ago I purchased a 83 GS650G as a non-running project. I have rebuilt the carbs, new battery, new plugs and the bike wants to start but will not. I'm getting fuel to the carbs, each cylinder has spark and motor has good compression. I was thinking maybe the timing was off but seems from I've read in manual that its a non adjustable system. Any ideas or pointers are greatly appreciated. Just getting bummed about the money I've invested and she won't come to life.

How far in is the idle knob??? Turn it out till it isnt touching the throttle linkage. Then turn it in till it just makes contact...and then go in about another 1 1 /2 turns. TOO much opening and they start hard. Then if it starts get it warmed up and adjust the idle to about 1200.

Second thing is where are the mixture screws set at??? Average starting point is 2 1/2 to 3 out from gently seated. And when you rebuilt the carbs, did you poke all the holes in the jets out with a fine wire? And did you get the hole in the very tip of the pilot jets clear???

Tight valves will also contribute to hard starts..adjust them if you havent done so.

Dont be twisting the throttle grip either. Hands off. Full choke and hit the starter button.

I will have to check the idle knob, When we rebuilt them we also did stage 3 from dynojet so all of the jets and such are new, mixture screw is 2 1/2 turns out

Yes, check plug wires. Left ignition coil fires 1 and 4, etc.
Briefly use prime position on petcock. Apply full "choke" and make sure that cable activates at carb end- rod slides to left about 1/2 inch.

do you have the stock airbox or pod filters installed? if stock, why the stage 3 kit? and when you rebuilt the carbs, how did you do so? have you verified spark to all 4 spark plugs? have you checked your valve clearances?
