  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

sry for audio not being that great I tried moving camera to try and get the noise the best I could. u can hear it about 30secs and towards then end the best, I have a distinct wine coming from engine o and its louder then what my camera is picking up, doesn't make a difference with clutch pulled in, so far I took both side covers of and inspected nothing obviously wrong and took valve cover off last night and intake cam to look at chain guide nothing obvious there. so idk iam out of ideas I really do try to read and check things before I post. hope its nothing major:pray: but iam not holding my breath
 
Did u just rebuild this engine/starter clutch assembly? The only thing I can think of is maybe your starter clutch is stuck and your engine is spinning your starter motor??? :-k This happened to the starter motor in my 77 before I owned it. Apparently when the PO revved up the engine he spun the starter motor to pieces.

Did you adjust vales or otherwise open the valve cover?

If the valve cover clearance is not correct you can grind off your cam gear.

Also disconnect the tachometer cable to see if it si tach whine.


Also nice looking bike from what we can see of it. I could not stand to listen anymore so dont know if you gave us a better shot or not.
 
Pull the signal generator cover off and see if something is rubbing.
 
I haven't rebuilt it, I think starter would have been toast by know I did drive it 30miles or so with the noise, still could be problem when I had the cover off the big gear would only spin one direction like its post to other then that idk how to test it.

I did adjust the valves a week ago using .004 feeler gauge I think that's good to go

Just started it without the tach cable gear deal in and still the same.
 
o and yes ive adjusted the valves several times bought bike with 20k on it just under 30k know so its had at least 10k of proper maintence valve adjust, head torque etc

Are you using a stock valve cover gasket or are you using a Real GASKET; that would be a very big non no if you used a real gasket.
get it off ASAP.

You could be grinding off your exhaust cam tach gear.
 
woooooooo.....that is not right!
you can do a couple things if you have the tools.
you can...
remove the entire starter clutch/rotor assembly and bump start the bike.
you can...
remove the entire clutch basket assembly...everything back to the trans bearing and put the cover back on and start it for a few seconds.

if the sound is gone then you know what area to work on.

Iam using all oem Suzuki gaskets learned about that along time ago.

May not be the problem, just hope it isn't. Then you are looking at new cams to keep your tach.

When I reinstall my valve cover I alway just sit it on the engine and just bump the starter till the end of the tach gear rotates a little. That means it is engaged and I can tighten down the valve cover. Seems to work every time.
 
that sound was LOUD..
sounds like the SC gear is spinning but i know a starter will last only a few seconds when that happens.
other thought is maybe a twisted crank...dunt know?

My 1100's have had regular valve clearance checks since bought new in 83 but in 130,000 combined miles, no adjustments required ever at intervals less than 10,000 miles. Never measured a valve at less than a 'loose' .003 clearance.

If your camera was pointed at the noisy area, might be easier to get a better idea. But if top end...and IF valves adjusted several times......something not right.

As others have suggested regarding removing clutch assembly or starter assembly...yep. And too, the old fashioned stethoscope / long wood dowel or screwdriver placed in various areas might be of assistance. Maybe even 'feel' it with your hand.....gloved of course..... hot hot.

That is a sweet GS. Like the exhaust. A lot!

What is the last maintenance you did before you had the sound?
 
The sound is louder in person then my camera, it does have that gear wine sound to me like someone puts gear timing set in a Chevy, in the morning I will pull all the clutch guts out and oil pump gear and run for few seconds see if it's still there. Look to see if I have means to.pull fly wheel if not I.will just remove the connecting gear from big gear to.starter.

I.guess I.should clarify on.valve adjustments when I.said it, I know I have checked the valve adjustment a few times but really don't remember but one time where actually had to adjust a few. Thanks

Couple months ago I.did full dyna ignition with relay mod, pods and gpwerks pipe jetted running pretty dang good, O and complete carb rebuild dip orings etc, rebuilt cam tensioner. Then rode it around for couple weeks then just noticed the noise like huh don't think I've heard that before

maybe tensioner is not set right or came loose.
