    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

plugs on idle jets

Hello everyone, I worked on many GSs, mostly cleaning the carbs. on larger engines I never saw rubber plugs on the idle jets, lately I opened a carb for GS650, I noticed it has plugs on the idle jets, are this important? why some have them and some dont, and how the feul gets to the idle jets with the plugs covering the jet? any logic?

This is another topic that a search would have answered. They are there for a reason and need to be there. Fuel gets to the idle circuit through a port off the main jet before it reaches the needle jet. If they aren't in place fuel doesn't get regulated by the main.

Because the owners didn't have enough sense to replace something Mikuni knew they needed. You not only screw up the idle mixture it's entirely possible it screws up the main circuit. This question probably gets asked about once a week on average and a simple search would have given you the answer. Here's what the site administrator feels about people who won't search. I found about 50 threads on this in a matter of seconds.

So the best thing for everyone to do when having a question is to do a search in the tech forum that is specific enough to pin things down where you don't end up with hundreds of hits. I know that sometimes this can be a challenge. As Billy says, you can always re-ask the question. For my own selfish reasons, I would hope people would do a search first before posting and avoid adding unnneccesary text to my database though. :rolleyes:

I don't know where you saw any "People like you" comment, it's not there. This just happens to be one of the most common questions posted here. Simple logic should tell you if Mikuni saw a need for them then they have to be there. I'll post some links for you.

I just did a simple search on "plug" and the answer turned up easily. Try using the advanced search option and limiting the search to title only.

Sorry to scold but honestly, this topic comes up all the time.

To answer your question: the part is a Pilot Jet Plug, not an idle jet plug, and they should be in place on all GS BS/CV carbs, not just some of them as you reference (with the possible exception being the GS250 which I've never worked on). Some idiot mechanics don't install them because they don't know what they are doing...you obviously have seen a few bikes that have been worked on by hacks.

my gs550 bsw30ss doesnt have them and im pretty positive they dont take them, they are not in the diagram

Those are the odd ball twin carbs that are unique to the GS550. BS Minuni's that come on the 400/425/450/500/650/700/750/850/1000/1100/1150 all have the plugs.
 
i know i just figured id give you a hard time being that you said all bs carbs but then again mine might be considered bsw's?
 
And just to clarify for the benefit of those who search in the future and find this thread, GS550s with CV carbs before 1983 (Mikuni BS32SS) DO have pilot jet plugs. Mine should be arriving today.
