A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

POD AIR FILTERS GOOD, OR BAD???

I am going to be rebuilding the carbs on my 1980 GS850L this winter, and am thinking of going to POD FILTERS. Just for the fact that I absolutley hate dealing with the factory air box. What is the general consensus on these types of filters? How will this change the way that I rebuild the carbs? Jetting right?

Anything else?
Oh yeah what about the crankcase breather hose?

If you're doing it only because of an occasional hassle with the airbox... don't do it. If you have a 4-1 header and jet kit installed they work pretty good. Beware! Changing to pods changes your air intake severely and usually requires ALOT of trial and error getting the carbs sorted out. Driveability can also be a problem. My 1100 used to be kind of onery at slower speeds around town but flat out screamed when the time and place permitted. I installed my jet kit pipe and K&N pods back in '86 and still tinker with them now and then. The kit I bought at the time had a small crankcase breather filter which K&N still makes I believe. Just attach the filter to the hose and zip-tie it to a frame rail

MAJOR rejetting!!! By the way, your GS850 has THE simplest airbox to remove in all of Suzukidom (loosen it and pull it out, right?).

You can buy the whole jet kit, together with the pod filters, from K&N and/or Dynajet. These guys figured out the jetting for you. Stick with the moderate jet kit, if your motor is stock internally.

But previous posts on this thread are correct: if you're just doing this to avoid a rare hassle with the airbox, then it's not worth the trouble. Also, if you've got stock exhaust, it's probably not worth the trouble either.

Individual pod filters and jet kits and 4 into 1 exhausts go together, it's kinda like a three-piece suit!

removing and installing the airbox on a 79 550, was a bitch.

i have pods on both of my 550's...but it does require some minor rejetting and experimentation.
