hey guys, a few questions for you. i just pulled off the carbs on my 79 GS550 and let me say what BIATCH of thing to do with the stock airbox in there. My 78 GS550 has pod air filters, and i want to swap this one over to pod air filters so i dont have to deal with putting that horrible airbox back in there and trying get it hooked up to the carbs again.

questions are:

1.) what size pods do i need? what is the K&N filter part number you've used in the past? do they fit in the frame rails and do the side covers for the bike fit okay?

2.) i have a 4-1 exhaust on it (that came from the pod filtered 78 bike). will i be able to run the pod filters and 4-1 exhaust without rejetting the carbs? if not...what should i jet to?

i appreciate your responses...thanks in advance,

~Adam

pods

Adam,

You could swap the 78 set to the 79 and see what happens, since you've already taken the carbs off the 79. Are the pods K&N's? Check the Main Jets and Needles in both carbs to see if they are the same size as the 79's, which are likely to be stock size if the airbox was on.

Since I'm not a 550 guru, you did not specify if the carbs changed between those 2 years

Dyno Jet may help you determine proper jet and needle height to compliment the 4 into 1.

Did you rejet the 78 with pods? Or someone else?

You'll need to rejet with pods and a pipe or you'll be running hot and lean.

yes the pods on the 78 were K&N, and definitly older. i am not sure if that bike was rejetted, but it was a mutant of a bike from the previous owners. it ran pretty rich (i fattened it up myself too) but i can't say whether it was rejetted or not...i'm going to assume it was since it had 26000 miles on it and ran pretty good.

the 78 with pods is not in the same local as i am now. its actually just out of the service shop because some work i had done there for a seal was crap, and they had to redo it. i really dont want to swap the carbs over to the 79 (they are the same exact carbs) because it ran too rich and since again, its not here.

on the Yahoo Suzuki GS forum someone gave me jetting info. I have to step my main jet up to a 95 if i go to pod conversion.

i need pod filter information now, size, shape, part number, and how they fit on your bike.

thanks guys,

~Adam

Try 90 jets AND raise the needles. Those carbs don't have adjustable choke circuits and my 550 was a cold-hearted beast with pods and a 4-1 MAC.

Warning: the EMGO pods you'll find do not fit the outer carbs! They hit the frame rails. Cycle-Recycle in Indy has them for real cheap, but you have to mash them. K&Ns cost a stupid fortune but they do make ones with a great angle to them. Uni filters (green foam things) will fit because they're smooshy, but man they're ugly as hell!

My advice -- spring for the K&Ns.

yeah...i know about the pods hitting the frame rails...my 78 GS550 has them, and they're bent to hell and smashed in there. hopefully the new ones bend okay.

i'm considering putting them on the carbs outside the bike, then trying to get it in there...but that sounds like it might be tougher.

you think that i should go only to an #90 main jet with pods and 4-1?

i was forwarded something that said #95 is what i should step up to on pre'80 carbs.

stock main jet is #80.

let me add my 2 cents if it helps and please yell at me if i'm confuseing you, i have 81 550 i re-jeted and installed pods and 4 into 1. i used the k and jet kit, which i don't belive they have for your year, but anyway i tryied useing another brand of cotton gaze air filter (pro street) because they looked cool, and i got them to fit no problem but all it did was give me problems, they were restricting the amount of air going into it. so what i'm saying is just use what ever filter model k and n offers for your bike that is a clamp on, other wise you are in for a lot of wasted time. at least k and n has done the dirty work and can be sure that their filters will fit and provide max air. oh yeah my jets jump from 92.5 to 155 but the 92.5 was mikuni jets and 155 was dyno jets so i don't know how much bigger they really were.

hey caferace i would love to see pics of your bike and share performance tips with you sometime.

first timer, what part of Chicago are you from? i'm out in the NW Suburbs for the summer, myself. 8)

about the jets, the Suzuki shop in Des Plains is the worst ever. they wouldn't make spark plug wires for me, they didn't have jets to fit my carbs nor could they order them, but at least they had O-rings for the needle jets on the carbs...so i got those.

i used bikebandit.com to order jets. i bought they #95's in a large slotted type, which should be about 8mm wide, i hope that's the jet i need. BB says it might take 5 days to process my order. :( i still haven't taken apart the carbs yet, but they are off the bike. i plan to give them a cleaning (bought two cans of carb cleaner yesterday) and replace the o-rings on the air jet, main jet, and pilot jet.

kinda sucks working on this out of an apartment and in a parking lot...i did get the Dyna S, Dyna Coils, and wires installation completed yesterday evening. need to statically time the bike, get the main jets put in, and then i can try running it. 8O
