Pods hate me...

So I read through the sticky to try and figure out my problem but I am just lost. Took the stock box off, puts pods on. Trimmed to fit nice enough. Start up bike and runs not so well. Hit throttle and tries to die but then revs up. So I got myself some jets. 92.5 was stock so I went to 100. Put all back together, same issue except it's worse. And then fuel started to come out of the pods.... (REALLY?!). So I've taken the carbs off five or some times trying to clean with carb cleaner and air thinking somehow something is clogged. Plugs are black. I'm super close to putting stock back on but I already spent the money on pods and love how they look. Help. Anyone.....

Richness is due to a few things.....

Float hts wrong thus allowing the bowls to fill too much.
Needle circlips set too low on the needle.
Wrong size pilots or main jets
Weak spark and /or wrong plugs
Pods too heavily oiled
Choke plungers not closing all the way or worn out rubber in the ends not letting them close off

These are just a few that pop to mind right off the bat. Service manual should be here, and note the carb rebuild tutorials on the right side margin.

Here's a question from the manual, which was very helpful thanks you, there's a the main fuel nipple in the center. What are the two nipples on each side for?

Vents and they stay uncapped. Lines are run down from them to between the swing arm and back of the tranny. the petcock vacuum nipple is on the back of carb 2. iI gets capped or plugged off when using a gravity bottle when doing a vacuum sync or using a non vacuum operated petcock such as a Pingle.

Nick, post some pics of what your working with and the what pods your using.

I am pretty sure your dad was one of my high school teachers and also was my drivers ed instructor. Feel free to private message me

Here's one photo. I can take more later. I'm a transplant from WI to NE and moved right by where a few Sommerfeld's lived.

I have always used KN pods and jet kits and had good luck. It certainly took a little time but I got there. Make sure you write down your changes with a description of how the bike ran. It helps when you are on trial 6 or 7 so you don't do the same thing twice. Especially when your on weekend # 3.

My best suggestion would be to put the airbox back on. If that is not a possibility, at least get rid of those cheap things you are calling "pods".

Yes, they are inexpensive, but they are inexpensive because they are cheap. And they are not re-useable, they are disposable, so you will incur that expense every time you need clean filters.

I know that K&N pods have a stellar reputation, but are also expensive. APE pods look just like K&N (but don't have the K&N logo), but cost about half as much, bringing them down into the "affordable" range.

I see that you are hesitant to go back to the stock airbox because you have already spent the money on those pods. If you are put off by all that expense, you would not like the expense of the good filters. I have seen ones like yours for about $25 for the set of four. APE pods are about $60-70, K&Ns are about $120.

.

I spent $50 on these pods :( The K&N filter seems to be a decent idea though.

I have the old box but in my "I really want this out and pods on", it's in two pieces... Now glued back together. I have a feeling my vent tubes being routed together instead of actually venting was part of my problem. This is all new to me. I come from a car racing background but have never done any of this before.

How does the bike run with no pods and no air cleaner?

I need to charge my battery and I may try it without the filters and see how it does now that I have the vent tubes made.

If the vents were connected with a hose then they cant "breath" and react to atmospheric pressure as the fuel is used from the bowls. Its sort of like you sucking the air out of a soda bottle with a pin hole in the bottom..you get the air out way faster than the hole can allow the pressure to equalize and refill the bottle with outside air. Thus you have a vacuum chamber..right?? Well if the vents cant let the bowls equalize pressure you engine cant suck fuel up efficiently...follow me???

Heres the deal, Steve is missing it. You need the pods I LINKED FOR YOU as they are the only ones that are going to fit correctly in your tight space. Now if you need the airbox I have 13711-34200, it is off a GS650L but may also fit your bike, I don't know, I leave that to you to research

That makes sense. And what may be my issue. The carbs have no idea what to do because they aren't breathing and fueling correctly. Thank you.

And another aspect to vent functions. Not only can they not breath and equalize pressure for the engine to suck fuel efficiently, as the bowls get low on fuel they need to vent so fuel can flow into them easy also. If there is something going into the bowls, then something needs to be displaced..which would be air. Just like air is displaced when you fill up a cup or bottle so must the air have a place to escape when fuel flows into the bowls.

Sorry, Jeff, you posted that while I was typing. Sorry that I did not refresh the page to see if anyone had posted while I was typing.

No, I am not really "missing it". I suggested that he has the wrong pods. I don't know the details of what fits and what doesn't, only that those cheapy pods (for which he was grossly overcharged) were no good, APE pods are better and K&N are better still, but still not as good overall as the stock airbox.
