    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Points or Electronic?

Just tore apart the machine today, hoping to do the timing (timing light).

The contacts are really pitted, which made timing a bitch. I obviously need to change the points.

Should I order some new contacts, or buy an electronic ignition? What could have caused these things to pit so badly?

Any feedback appreciated.

Howdy Jon. Pitting of mechanical points will happen over time but abnormal pitting (and/or in short time) is usually the result of poor condenser action. I'd recommend changing both each time you change points if you stay with this system. Having experienced many years of reliable point service, I have no reason to change and know that my chances of successful roadside repair are going to be better.
 
Thanks. I think I'll stick with the points. I'll order them and new condensers on Monday.

Just took her for a test drive, and ouch. No power over 20% throttle now. Apparently I made things worse.
 
I have a Dyna Ignition system on my bike and it has been trouble free.
Wouldn't trade it for anything \\:D/
 
I've had points and electronic ignitions. The points do need some attention. The Dyna S is an install and forget about it system.

Agree with getting rid of the points/condensor. for electronic. Changed on my old 750 years ago after limping home 100kms on two cylinders. Would you still want to run points in your car; just a thought.
 
Modern electronic ignitions are generally reliable.
For a few extra dollars, you can fit a system that allows you to program a custom advance curve.
These systems can provide a very smooth and wide power band.

Hmm, ok, so maybe I will order the electronic. If I don't find a better option, I'll order the dyna s on monday.

I was thinking of going to dyna s, but Ill think I'd rather get a new set of points and condensors.

Actually, I am still running points in my '58 Chevy. I am going to switch it out for a Pertronix system soon. Points will work, they just tend to be fiddly. I keep an extra set in my glove box.
 
I love the dyna s and wouldn't have it any other way but....
I still have points in all of my old tractors ( 9N and 860 )
 
NOw if you would just put a racing exhaust system, pods and a Dyna ignition on that tractor, you might be able to plow at 100+ mph. Although, I'm not sure how well a tractor is going to drift through the corners. LOL

Now my old 1955 ford 860 powermaster has a whopping 50 HP....LOL
my old 1939 9n on a good day may have 20 HP...LOL
as far as curves go the powermaster can turn on a dime...
if you jam on the left or right brake peddle\\:D/
but the super heavy water filled tires don't help much:-D
I haven't plowed much most of the time I just bush hog
with my big tractor and run the finnishing mower with
the little 9N....1939 model and still humming right along
they don't build anything like that anymore.
 
Well, I found out that I need to get the Dyna from a local distributor as the company won't sell directly to Canada because they have an agreement with PartsCanada. Not a terrible thing, as one of the companies in town may have the part in stock. Price isn't as terrible as I was expecting either; $200 bucks (Canadian).

I wonder if anyone in town carries valve shims.
