    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Actually, I thought this was a faster way of getting to the root of my problem. I literally have heard from 6 different people on this and got 3 different answers. Thanks Y'all!
 
Well i voted, and got the same as jethro , so that makes me feel smart.
 
Problem is...I'm still getting a variety of answers. I guess I'm just looking for the "most likely" scenario.
 
since most of the electrics are protected by fuses, my vote would be the starter . 12 volts but enough amps to cause a bad burn. the starter is'nt protected by a fuse. ikazuki

None of the above. Your jump supplies 12-14 volts, just like the battery does.

Do you damage your car when you jump start it from a truck? No. Same goes for a bike.

One qualifier, same as everyone else's - unless you do something stupid.
 
The question is which of the following is most likely to get damaged from a jump start. The answer is the current regulating diodes in the r/r, without question, are most suspectable to excess heat and damage. Jump start or no jump start.
 
the best way too jump start from a car battery is too not have it attached too the car. I chose other. I was hoping this was going too be kick starts. and I had a story too tell about too.\\:D/

but I have on a few occasions had to jump the bike from the car....

I was told to jump it without the car running to reduce the voltage just a lil...

and it was all good - no damage - no harm

simply - but carefully - hold the jumpers against bike terminals (not clamped to them) while a buddy hits the starter button....:-D


like I said - No knowledge - justmy experience...:-s


edit - although my regulator was/is already rooted....

I didn't see battery listed (or ignitor box, for that matter) but I would vote that the battery is the most likely thing to get wrecked when it comes to jumping. For one, if you are in a situation where you have to jump your bike, then there's a good chance that the item malfunctioning is the battery. Likely cause of the battery malfunctioning is that it is low on fluid (unless something else is shot first). If the battery is low on fluid & you apply enough voltage to it you will warp the plates, right?

Am I full of it or is this a decent answer?
 
Probably not...since I'm not NINE YEARS OLD!!
I don't believe I attacked your age or even inferred that you might be 9 years old. I answered "other" because in my many years of driving and repairing motorized conveyances, the only damage from "jump starting" occurs from incorrectly hooking up the jumper cables, hence "somthin' stoopid".

THAT is the only correct answer.

The query implies that there is some difference between the use of a car battery and a bike battery, and that the difference is likely to cause some damage.

They may be of different physical size, but the two batteries are exactly equal in what they deliver to the bike.....12 volts (nominal). Presuming the bike is in a normal and functioning condition, the bike will draw only the amperage it needs from either battery.

The difference in the potential amperage delivery is irrelevant, and has no bearing whatever on the subject.

If connections are properly made, there is no possibility that the bike would or could know the difference.
