A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I have a 80 GS850. I dont know how to tell if it is a G or GL. I took off the tank and found a surprise underneath.

here are a couple of pics of it...

the two wires (black & yellow/black) are snipped off...?

thanks for the info... you guys are great.. I am brand new to the forum and this is a new bike... my 3rd suzuki though.

How can I tell if it is a G or GL.. can you guys point me in a good direction?

thanks

Those are your wires for your gas gauge. You will be on empty.....there's a couple more wires there that they connect to near the front of the seat.

Take a picture of the whole bike and we'll tell you what you have. :)

EDIT : Also, there no fuel pump, the gas is gravity fed.

If it looks cool, it's a G. Otherwise it's a GL ;)

(I own an L BTW)

L's usually have:

1. Stepped seat
2. "chromed" fenders
3. Buck horn bars
4. Leading axle forks - the axle is actually in front of the fork instead of directly under it.

Of course your bike could have started life as an L, and have been "de-L'd" a bit. The buck horn bars are usually the first things to go.

The pic of my bike is in my profile... Here is a pic of it otherwise...

One thing.. the previous owner painted the tank.. (NOT GOOD) and as well installed a Harley softail rear fender and tail light/license plate mounts and sportser seat as well..

just to keep that in mind.. was not my idea... LOL

It needs a bit of work..

It's been Franken-bike'd

The tank looks non-L. Forks, too - but he either painted the lowers or replaced 'em.

Do you have a fuel gauge?

yes i do have a fuel guage.... and it has been frakenbiked... it is a little sad.. but i think i can get her back on track.

Cafe that Biotch!

I'm in lawrenceville. we should meet up sometime.. that would be cool

did a little.. used to race AMA. dont anymore... just getting back into it really.. had a 77 GS750 before.. now have the 80 GS850

If ya need anything, lemme know.
I'm not the best, but I've brought a couple of em back to life thanks to this board.

Lots of knowledge around here, hang around.

The main issue that i have right now is that it will start.. got that happening finally.. however if i give it any throttle it just dies.. will not stay running at all...

and it will only run with the choke all the way out.. and then not for long.. took off the air filters to let it get some more air... and then noticed that the plugs are all looking bad...

it seems to be running really rich and im not sure what to do to lean it out... any suggestions?

Keep in mind it wont run worth a $hit without the airbox unless ya rejet it. Many try to tune this way, aint happnin.
Hope Basscliff will be along with your welcome page. WHOLE lots of info about our bikes. Read, read and read. Tons of stuff.
If you really want to make the bike run like its supposed to you'll go through everything. Valves, brakes and carbs ect... Might sound like a lot but once ya do it, it's done if done correctly.

Give us a little history on the bike, how long it sat, sat outside, miles ect..

Edit, I see pods on it? If the previous owner put those on it without jetting its never run right.

I agree with Dan, it is a "G", not a "GL". Two giveaways: it does not have leading axle front forks (that means the axle is actually in front of the fork tubes instead of below them like yours are). Second, the "L" model of that vintage had a smaller tank with plastic covers to hide the frame.

Have you received BassCliff's mega welcome yet? You need to go through all the steps he outlines, skipping none.
