A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Progress!!! 1978 GS1000E Restoration/Performance Rebuild

Final product - wrapped lovingly in Tesa 51036 hi-temp fabric harness tape with an acrylic adhesive (won't get gooey like electrical tape). Very abrasion resistant and has a professional appearance.

THAT is a tedious project for sure, nicely done. Can I get one for $40? ;)

Just went through all 39 pages and this build scares me now that I have my GS down for maintenance (probably its first, from the state of things). The urge to tear it apart and dump money I don't have is strong. Love this build.

This is the cleanest harness build I've seen and I'm quite surprised at how small teh bundle actually ended up. Was there much in the way of circuits that you removed or were that many "extra" wires in the original?

I know you are trying to do a top job on this build all the way around so it probably does not matter in that respect but I'm wondering how much you needed to spend to get all those different wire colors, connectors and other odds and ends?

Honestly, I couldn't tell you exactly how much it cost - things like wire and terminals are "extras" that get added to my repository of stuff that may be used at a later date, so, these items aren't going to waste - I also sunk some extra $$$ into buying them because I wanted some leftover. At this stage in the project, I stopped counting the $$$ - If at some time I actually calculate what I spent on the entire restoration I might have a heart attack :-D

When I looked at the schematic for the original harness, I was blown away by how much unnecessary crap was in there - I quickly came to the conclusion that it would be far easier to build a new harness around my use of relays and new fuse panel rather than try to modify the old one. Once I redraw the schematic on a new sheet of paper I will post it here so anyone can re-create it.

Part of what adds a lot of time and some additional cost is that I have had to waste a bunch of terminals in an attempt to get things to lay where I want them - if a wire in a fuse holder is too short/long, it has to be redone, wasting the terminal. When you want things to be functional AND look good, the aforementioned trial and error process is unavoidable.

I have a favor to ask of anyone subscribed to this thread:

Can someone take a couple close-up shots of the REAR turn signal mounting brackets on a GS1000 while they are installed on the bike? Thanks!

Wow, for real??? ;)
I back tracked until I found your test, very good. Too good to have a problem later.
Experience had me worried such a neat job would have to be redone because of some little thing.

This thread is amazing, and is full of great advice / product recommendations. This has inspired me to redo my wiring harness and apply a protectant to my polished aluminum.

Excellent work!!

Got a bunch of stuff done today, so, here is a little video teaser (click) :p

Enjoy!

Wire harness installed in bike
All battery cables, starter, and ground cables fabricated and installed
Rear brake switch and spring installed
Rear brake/tail light installed

I was going to say "really clean! Awesome work!", and then I saw how dirty that starter is :( Kidding!

Just a refresher....1st cruise night of the season is May 7th at A&W in N Aurora {starts 6pm} ...then Lake St in front of Ace afterwards{9pm} till ?am. Cycle or not.....weather playing nice, of course too. {it's Illinois - it could snow like two Saturdays ago}

I doubt that the gs will be done by then, however, I may show up on my fz6!

Well, I was brought up with "it's always nice to be asked".....I'm sure george{cb750 brat}, steve{kawi concours} and wally{hd dresser or his vw wagon} will probably be there...me, life has kept me away from working on the cycle for a while...ugh. Need to start going thru mine soon!

Help...

Can someone snap a quick photo of the proper positioning of the clutch release arm - I can't remember how much it was clocked on the clutch shaft. Thanks!

Where did you buy your wire? I can find the weatherpack connectors and solid color wire but I can't seem to find any wire with the white/black tracer on it. Your harness inspired to start looking at mine lol. I am planning on finding a second harness to rebuild from so my bike doesn't spend any time down.

For the wire, eBay is your friend - do a search for "18 txl wire"

For connectors, try this guy www.cycleterminal.com
