A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

bruce you should give https://www.kgcoatings.com/ a call. Just got done talking to them yesterday about what to use to paint my engine and they have great customer service, they should be able to help you pick a coating that will withstand gas and be very durable maybe even help keep heat off of the carbs.

It's just me but i think the carbs would look pretty bad ass in a dull dark magnesium grey color.

I'm going to try some gloss black caliper paint. :)

Manual cam chain tensioner coming in the mail (thanks for the link, PJ). Ready to install cams and do the degreeing. VM29's are getting cleaned now. Ordered new bowl and top gaskets from Z-1, and orings from Nessism

I started the painting of the VM29's. So far, so good. Also new aluminum choke plungers.

Crappy pics... I'll take some out in the sun tomorrow. I'll also be polishing up the tops and bowls better.

Can't wait to see the Beast all finished. Think it'll be ready for the Southwest rally?

Looking good there Bruce! What kind of paint is on the carbs?

It's gloss black caliper paint! I figured that should hold up well. I test painted a piece of aluminum before I used it on the carbs. I let it cure and then poured gas and then brake fluid on it. It took it well and didn't peel off! So hopefully it will hold up well. The caliper paint is also heat tolerant.

Wow Bruce, I never thought I would say these words together but "Pretty Carbs"! Ray.

Thanks, Ray! They should look nice with the tops and bottoms polished better.....and maybe some polished aluminum velocity stacks. :D

What brand caliper paint? I painted my rear caliper with dupli-color caliper paint. I spilled some fluid while bleeding it and it took the paint right off.

I'm using the VHT stuff:

After dipping my carb bodies, I have then been boiling them in water. You'd be surprised how much oil is left in the water. The boiling seems to draw out any oil in the porous aluminum. We'll see how well it holds up. If it ends up looking like crap over time, I'll get the bodies powdercoated.

engine paint looks awesome. whats the best method to clean the cases and get them prepped for paint? i'm in the proccess of going thru my 650 i picked up for free. its my first bike and i want to use it to learn how to work/rebuild/modify/service it instead of buying a new one out right, being in the garage is my time away from the ole lady. ha ha ha, she helps sometimes though so she's alright.

I scrubbed mine clean using Simple Green concentrate. Then I used MEK to clean off any residual oil. Then masked, primed, and painted.

What kind of primer and paint did you use on the cases? Did you sand or scuff them to get the primer to stick?

beat me to it

beat me to it

Same question here..what primer did you use?

I used the Duplicolor Engine enamel and engine primer. But I have since heard that the PJ1 stuff might be better stuff. Not that I'm not happy with my results. Everything turned out great, and went on great. Time will tell how the paint holds up. But the most important thing you can do is to PREP EVERYTHING PROPERLY. Everything must be perfectly clean and free of oil and dirt. That will guarantee the best results.

I did my 1000 motor w/PJ1 Satin and it looks great and has had fuel spilled on it in a puddle...not a problem at all. Didn't use any primer, just cleaned & cleaned & cleaned.
