OK back in the day I tried my hand at road racing. after sliding on my rear section and back for a long time, and let me tell you leather helps but you still get burned. I brought the busted up 91 GSXR750 home and put it up under the back shed. Now it will be my donner bike for the 85 GS1150 Turbo project. I will be using the USD front end with wheels and brakes, the complete rear wheel and brakes along with the 530 chain conversion. So stay tuned for pics along the way.

I forgot to pull the Ohlins rear shock, I wonder if it is still good?
Ohlinsshock.jpg

The rest of the bike or whats left, It has a nice sligshot 750 head and a piston kit.

fist step to get the front end and wheels off.

The 1150 as she sits now.

Honestly, I would leave that 1150 as it is and find a different bike for your mods. That things looks to good to tear apart.

I will certainly be following this project, Big T. Although the Turbo bike looks great as-is.
I think the zip tie might have more life in it than the Ohlins cartridge.

shock

shock

Yea I think I robbed that hose clamp a long time ago. It actually still feels good but it didn't weather so well. I would leave the 1150 stock but it has more power than the stock front end wants, the rear already has a Ohlins rear shock. I have a strap on it to limit trave. I will be taking it to the 1/8th mile after work thursday for some test and tune runs at the local dragstrip. I have it set on 15 pounds of boost. I just want to get some before and after time runs to see what it can do. I will post some pics of it at the track. I think it will look great with the GSXR wheels and USD front end.

I may loose the faring also and put an E headlight on it we will see how it looks first.

:-\\\The sweet melody of a turbo bike,
I really like the look of 17 wheels on old bike, go for it.
I have take that road myself, very easy mod.

+1 on the sound of a turbo spooling up. My car is turboed and I LOVE hearing it spool up and kick me in the butt and take off!

got the 750 ready

got the 750 ready

Got home today and tool most of the 750 apart. I might have run into a snag. The 1150 swingarm is not going to hold a 190 tire. a 180 will fit and is close. I have about 2" inches I can pull it back to give the tire some room. The swingarm starts to go in about where the front of the tire is. It's going to be close. If it does not rain I will have it at the strip tomorrow after work. so stay tuned for a full report and pics.

arm

arm

Thanks for the offer but I have a Bandit 1200 swingarm and I also have the one from the above GSXR which looks exactly the same. The 1150 has a custom arm on it now and it is 66" inch wheelbase. I will be converting it to the GSXR arm and susp. in the winter. right now though I want to get it rolling on some 17" inch wheels and the USD forks. first with the ES faring. then if I don't like it put just the E headlight on it. I hope it runs good at the track tomorrow and no rain.

went to the track

went to the track

OK here is the track report.... After work we went to the local 1/8th mile dragstrip that is not far from the plant I work at. I wanted to get some base runs on the turbo 1150. I added the front strap and pulled her down, warmed her up and then went to the line, I did a pretty good burnout in first, the tire did good and was trying to push the front end. It's a little rich on the bottom end and could use a little tweaking but it clears right up. I didn't use the air shifter for my first pass and left soft. 1.68 60ft. 6.22 @ 123mph foot shifting. I had added a few rounds to the wastegate screw and it showed 12 lbs. on the gauge. i was trying to get 15 lbs. I need a shift light. I have no idea what rpm I shifted at. It pulls so hard it's like riding a 2-stroke dirtbike with a powerband. not bad for foot shifting. here is a pic before the first run with the front end strapped down.
holidaybeach.jpg

Next I added a couple more turns to the wastegate for some more boost. I whipped the turbo up this time and left with a 1.61 60ft. and a 6.02 @ 125 mph. I tried watching the tach but found myself short shifting with the airshifter at 9K for some reason. the rev limiter is set at 11K, again a shift light or auto shift box would help.this bike pulls pretty hard another pic waiting.
beach2.jpg

now I feel pretty comfortable and line up against my buddy from work on his 06 ZX14. I guess he made me ride harder, I had a 1.54 60ft. and went a solid 10.5K shifting 5.93 @ 129 mph and she showed a hair over 15 lbs. on the boost gauge. He wanted a rematch and said he was going to use his bottle this time so We went and got some track side food while the bikes cooled. I enjoyed a Cut-a-light corn dog and a Diet Mt. dew. So we went back out and I started my burnout and all of a sudden I saw oil spraying everywhere. I quickly shut the bike off and rolled it back out of the burnout box. I got off and looked and one of the oilcooler lines had broken off of the oilcooler????? Yea...I was on the tracks crap list. At least I had only oiled down the burnout box with about a quart of oil. thank god that didn't happen while I was on the track or at the big end at 120+ mph. It could have been ugly here is a pic of the line. I am going to go get some new ones made tomorrow.
oilcooler.jpg

The bike runs great and is a power house. there is more left in it I think. I got lucky tonight. I had gone over the bike good but this just lets you know check everything....twice. I start installing GSXR parts tomorrow. stay tuned. PS, I really dont like the faring but it is nice to tuck behind. I still might make it an E model.

I'm not big on fairings either, but I do like a little windshield to get behind. Great story/pics. Keep them coming. Too bad about the oil lines. They never break when you're still in your own driveway, but thankfully this one didn't come apart (like you said) when you're screaming down the strip!

Make it an E! You will love the look of it! Too bad about the oil line but better it happened where it did!! Wait till you put a SLICK on it & REALLY get after it! Do you have a lock up clutch in it yet? If not GET one! You WILL be needing it with that much power if you get it to hook up. If you need one let me know as I have several. Good numbers! That kind of mph in the 1/8 mile is 8 sec 1/4 HP! Ray.

1/8th mile

1/8th mile

Thanks Ray, Yes the bike has a MTC lock up. It has pretty much all the best stuff in it. (Except oil cooler lines) That track is just an 1/8th mile. It is located just a couple miles from the Mercedes-Benz automotive plant where I work. A bunch of us go on Thursday nights after work. It's a lot of fun.

Wow, Looks like a really fast street bike. At first I was wondering why you "need" a TURBO 1150; U must be a nut .

But now I see you mostly run it at the track .

Yes I am in Alabama.

Yes I am in Alabama.

Yes I live in Alabama. I do run it mostly for fun at the track, Can you ever have enough power??? Anyway.... I started phase one, the rear wheel. So after a quick run to Wal-Mart for the Qircraft Quality Stripper, matte Krylon aluminum spray paint and a can of Krylon gloss clear. $17.35 I headed back to the house and pulled the rear wheel off of the GSXR750.
GSXRw1.jpg

Then I sprayed the whole wheel down with the stripped and let it sit for 10 minutes. while it was doing it's thang (red neck term) I pulled the wheel off of the 1150. came back over to the 750 wheel and a couple of swipes and there was the nice machined lip of the wheel. A note here, get you a green scotch brite pad to help loosen the stubborn areas. You might have to spray it several times. The tire will not be used I am getting a new one. It will burn your hands so use some gloves that are throw away. Here it is with the stripper working.
sw2.jpg

after i had exposed all of the machined lip of the wheel I took it to the local car wash to pressure wash it. hit McDonalds while i was out.
MD.jpg

Here is where I tapped the wheel up. First you use electrical tape to mask off the machined part of the wheel. the electrical tape allows you to put it right up next to the cast part that I will be painting. The rest is done with masking tape. here is the electrical tape on the wheel and you can see it has been pressure washed. it was a white wheel once.

more rear wheel.

more rear wheel.

Make sure you wipe the wheel down good before painting. I used the aluminum matte first. after it's painted it looks kinda like those robots in a Mr Roboto video. this is where the clear comes in. When the aluminum drys I apply the gloss clear and that gives me the finish and color I want. I wanted it to be close to the 1150's frame color and it looks good. Here is the wheel tapped up and sprayed with the aluminum. You can do this and not take your tire off. Just tape it up good.
nwp3-1.jpg

After it dried good I sprayed the clear on it and it had the nice color I was looking to get. I then peeled the tape off put the disc, sprocket carrier on and test fit everything. here are a couple of pics of both sides. It sits lower off of the center stand. it's close.
