I have a 1978 GS750 with ~4200 original miles. All engine and transmission components are original.
This morning I started my bike and let it warm up for a few minutes (it was 38? outside). When I pulled the clutch, I had what I consider to be normal resistance but immediately heard a metallic click from what I assume was the transmission (at least in that vicinity) and noticed that, at the same time, the clutch lever was easier to pull (less resistance) for about the 1st half of its range of motion.
I can now pull the lever with little effort for the first half of its travel, then I get what I would consider to be normal resistance. When I release the lever, it returns quickly to the halfway point, then slowly (~ 2-3 seconds) returns to the normal position. I had no problems shifting, it simply seemed that I had less tension/resistance for the first half of the clutch lever travel.
Additionally, when I pull the clutch lever back, it doesn't begin to disengage until it has passed the halfway point. The opposite is true when releasing the clutch. I think this is the same play I had before, I just had more resistance for the first half of clutch lever travel.
I plan on doing a thorough inspection, but I figured I'd ask if anyone else has experienced something like this.
Does anyone know what might have happened? I've got a long ride scheduled this weekend; should I not go on the ride? Everything seems okay, but I'm worried that a catastrophic failure will manifest itself if I neglect the symptoms.
