Q: 1977 GS750B clutch

GS750

Forum Mentor
Hi all, a quick question on the clutch for my 1977 GS750B.

Ok, local dealer tells me that the clutch springs, fibres and metals are only suited to this model?

Is this true?? I have a 1979 GS750LN parts bike but I have not stripped the motor out as yet.

My clutch springs are starting to get a bit lazy and the clutch has started slipping in real hot weather, its been adjusted up several times to try various things but it is still the same. I checked and lubed the clutch cable and push rod and both are moving how they are supposed to.

I think he may be full of a brown smelly substance...

Just did a quick look at Babbitts Online and searched for the part numbers on Bike Bandit to see what models they fit...

Driven plate part #21451-28C31

I won't list the models, apparently it fits 162 models...

Clutch spring part #09440-19007

Same again, except 73 models, some of which aren't even GS'...

Hope that helps...

PS: Forgot to mention there's a '79 750LN listed there for all three items... could make it a very cheap fix for you :D

As for the pressure plate springs..I would put new ones in..cheap enough. And to the steels and fibers. Look on basscliffs website for the manual and check the service limits of each fiber..measuring in several places on each one. Look at the steels for any signs of wear scuffing, disco, loration or warpage. Also while its apart, pull the basket and check the dampner springs in the back of the basket flywheel.

thanks everyone. been busy and I didnt get to have a look around before I posted my question, though I figured the liklihood of being a one off clutch unit was rather low.

Wow, a dealer who can't read his own parts fiche?

Who woulda thought?

Yeah I think it comes down to more "We dont really want to bother with old stuff"

That's a bit of a bummer. I've found the guys at Brisbane Motorcycles to be reasonably ok.

If I give them a list of part numbers it's very straight forward, if they have to look them up then it seems to be not too much hassle.

Looking for aftermarket stuff I've had a 50/50 success rate. When looking for the fork gaiters they were great and I got a set that were perfect, but when I called about a master cylinder, not helpful at all, but to be fair I called at one of their busier times of the day.
