    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Question about gauge cluster compatibility...anyone?

I've been looking at a speedo/tach gauge cluster on ebay from a '79 GS1000 and I'm wondering about the compatibility with my '82 850L. The cluster I'm looking at is a 140mph unit and is sans the gear indicator lights, hence it has a little bit of a refined and compact appearance, which I really like. But, is the gear drive on my '82 going to work as the speedo on my bike tops out at 85mph. I'm pretty sure I can wire it up no problem, but should I be looking for a different wheel gear drive "thingy"? Oh, and by the way....just like to put out some public kudos for andrewclaycomb...a true honest guy!!!
 
The drives are the same. Only dif is the 85MPH speedo stops advancing at 85. This was done when mandatory speed limits were dropped to 55MPH all over the country.

Aaaaaahhhh, right...that makes perfect sense. Good thing they did that to save all that fuel that they can charge $2.75 a gallon for now. Man, were they thinkin ahead, or what!? :))

Check the part numbers. Only issue would be any electrical connectors. Cable driven is cable driven so speedo's and tachs will all work. The other lights and stuff may need some hacking. You just missed a complete set on eBay. You can grab an 82 - 83 850/1100, I dunno about any earlier.
 
I changed mine out from 85mph to the 140mph ones, straight fit and no messing about, didn't take long to change it over.

The GS1000E clocks only have 4 idiot lights down the centre where the 850 would have more. I know they have left and right indicator built into the whole console so try going for a GS1000G version to look original. As for the clocks they are held in by 4 8mm domed nuts that remove the chrome backs then 4 philips remove the plastic cover for the wires folowed by 4 8mm nuts that hold the clocks onto the bracket. (Oh I forgot to mention the speedo and rev cables...)
Nothing to it....

The speedo drive on the front spindle will be the same for 750-1100 as its the same part if your running a 19inch front wheel.
