    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

question about stator a.c. voltage tests

I've perused the threads many times, including the stator papers. I understand that if the leg-to-case test shows any a.c. voltage at all, the stator is considered bad. My leg-to-leg a.c. tests show about 65 volts at 5000 rpm, which is ok. The leg-to-case continuity tests show no continuity. But my leg-to-case a.c. tests show about 20 volts.
My question is this:
Can I continue to run this stator as long as it's producing enough a.c. voltage to the regulator to charge the battery/run the bike without harming anything? Or will I damage components?

You should ignore all tests results except the leg to ground (which failed). It is the only one giving you a true indication.

You are right at the cusp of having a seriously shorted stator. You did not indicate your quick test results but I suspect that your bikes voltage drops with loads such with and without headlamp. If you have swapped out for LED's then your power demands will not be as high and maybe you can get away with it for the time being. Ironically if you did not swap out the R/R and get rid of the SHUNT R/R the LED would have been the things that did in the stator.

Simple answer is you will do no damage, unless you run the battery down and get stuck somewhere.

your stator is on the failure trail- might last forever, but more likely it will cook itself and then you'll get no output . But it wpn't damage anything when it fails.
 
I've a polaris sh775 on order now. The orig have up the ghost a week ago. Thanks for the quick responses!

The SH-775 can't make a dying stator stop dying,thought it might postpone its death. this is the time to get a new stator and let the SH-775 work its magic. PM member Steve and see if he has a rewound unit available. Or go ebaying and take your chances.
 
Yea, at this point it is like trying to get the last bit of life out of your tires after the tread wear indicators are all showing :(
