I recently came into owning an 81gs450 and of course, me being me, i cant leave well enough alone. Ive been reading/hearing that pods cause drivibility issues on cv carbs, but then again i hear and see people running them with no issues. Can i get a final verdict on this? Does anyone have pods and a bike that runs and drives like stock? (or at least very, very close) I finally finished all the maintaience that the po had been slack on and now its time to start having fun modifying the bike.

thanks for the help
clay,

I am a little new to these cv carbs, but I have heard the same thing about the pod filter. I have been running my GS400 with and with out pods for a few months now, but I am having some bigger problems than just the pods. I would really like to ditch the CV carbs all together. Before you spend to much time or money on the CV'c (I have not even found parts yet) look into buying some new carbs.

If you want a bike "that runs and drives like stock", why not just leave it stock? :-k

Why go through all the hassle of installing the pods, then jetting and re-jetting just to have it run like stock?
Is the look of pods really all that important?

Personally, if I was to go through all that much effort, I would want more in the way of a tangible reward, not just aesthetics.

.

C'mon Steve...they're looking for the additional HP gains from the pods. Somewhere in the range of 2-3 HP on a 450 really wakes the bike up. :-\\\

Why? They're not bad items, and worth a hp or two over the traditional VM carbs. I'd say you just don't know how to make the most of tuning them. You *have* tuned them correctly to compensate for the pods, right?

Yeah, I reckon. I think I'll post something I wrote elsewhere...

Hi Mr. boogerboy72,

Let me dump a TON of information on you. (I think Mr. snipes needs to re-read his "mega-welcome" too.)

It is "best practice" to get your bike running perfectly in its stock form, then you have a baseline to start with and measure against when you start modifying. Yes, tuning the Mikuni BSxx (CV) series of carbs is a bit of a voodoo art, but it can be done using the proper procedures. Use the informational links on my little website and the experience of the members here to help you. (Personally, I don't think it's worth all the hassle for a couple of extra bhp, but that's just me being an old fuddy-duddy.) Let's get started. :D

I just stopped by to welcome you to the forum in my own, special way.

so what exactly is tuning them correctly, just chainging jets? Thats what im trying to get at, what changes have to be made to make them run correctly,

Hi.

Yes, basically (and this is very simplified) you install the proper size jets to create the proper air/fuel mixture. Different jets serve different throttle position openings; idle, pilot, needle jet/jet needle, and main jet for idle, 1/4 throttle, 1/2 - 3/4 throttle, and wide open throttle. There is some overlap between the circuits. I've collected some things that perhaps you should study:

Where did you read that?

Here is what I saw in his original post:

Does not appear that he is looking for any improvement. In fact, there were no reasons given for the change, only that he wants to change because he "cant leave well enough alone". :o

Ive read so much about people having issues with them running badly, thats the only reason i asked about driving like stock. Ill order some pods and a set of jets and just see where i go from there.

thank you bass for the help!

Just make sure you get some good quality pods, if you insist on going that direction. The most common ones that are found at a cheap price are probably EMGOs. If I remember correctly, they do not need to be oiled, and are designed as disposable. When they get dirty, you need to buy new ones. Because they are cheaply made, they flow differently and are harder to jet. You are better off spending the money and getting K&Ns. Their performance is more consistant and they are cleanable and will last as long as the bike, if given reasonable care.

They are designed to be thrown in the TRASH... as soon as you open the package..

Dont waste your money on those Emgo filters.. Even with a jet kit, they cause problems on top of problems, they'll never have your bike running right, and you will want to shoot yourself in the face.. Garbage in is garbage out. And EMGO=Garbage...

Just a little humor on a Friday afternoon, Steve. I should have made it a little clearer...

1. He wants to achieve the illusive .5hp per cc number that is floating around the web?

2. Maybe he is planning on parting out the bike and just needs confirmation that pods will allow him to part it out, knowing that it "won't run correctly", is the next post?

3. OH...I know... "stock CV carbs too easy, want more of a challenge". ;)
