    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Well, I'm offically the owner of a 1986 GSXR750.

The bike needs carb work, which I can handle and is no big deal.

I would just like to get an opnion regarding the engine. The milage is very high at 45,000. Since this is a winter project, should I go through the engine and basically "overhaul" it, or can I expect that there is still a lot of life left in that engine???

Just need opinions. If it's only good for another 20,000 miles or so, I might as well look into rebuilding it.

Somehow, I have a problem categorizing 45,000 miles as "very high". :shock:

Yeah, I am accustomed to driving Toyotas for over 300,000 miles with no problems, but I have also had a Kaw Voyager that I sold with 93,000 to a willing buyer. I bought my Wing two years ago next week with 91,000 miles on it, it now has 124,000. My wife's 850 is sitting in the garage right now with 58,047 miles showing.

I would suggest a compression check, then monitor oil useage for a while. If it does not use much oil, chances are that the engine is still in good shape. Just ride it and don't worry about it. 8-[

Ride it, 45,000 is nothing for these GSes, if there 's been oil changes along the way. Chances are it will need nothing for years.
 
Those early GSXR bikes were hammered on pretty hard by most owners. The condition of the engine will have a lot to do with how hard it was used and how well it was cared for. I agree with Steve to check compression and oil consumption. My guess is that if you get 20k more miles you will be doing about right given the normal usage of that type of bike.
 
Wow, not sure what to make of this, and a little ****ed.

The frame tag claerly says GSXR1100, but the engine is stamped 748cc.

My guess is someone blew up the original engine and installed a 750..???

Were the 750 and 1100 chassis the same?
 
Thats strange. Most guys in the UK go the other way and shuve a 1100 lump into a 750 frame. So with that thought they must be compatible but I must also say I have never tried it.

Early GSXR's were racer straight out of the crate so may well have had a hard life. I know the 1100 has plain shell bearing against the GS's roller bearing so oil quality is important.

As for strip and rebuild that can only be decided on condition, burning oil, compression performance etc.
