I got a fuel tank I belive off a 82 gs1100, well it gots the fuel pump assembly inside the tank that bolts in place. I was wandering if I need that on my 81 GS1000GL, and If not can i simply remove it and weld a plate in circular plate in place and call it good?

Hi,

I don't think that's a fuel pump. It should be the fuel gauge sending unit. See THIS GUIDE and THIS GUIDE to be sure we're talking about the same thing. If you don't want the fuel gauge to work you can either leave it in place, just disconnected, or seal up the hole like you mentioned.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

If you have a fuel pump in there, you have a one-of-a-kind, VERY RARE bike.

Please pass that VERY RARE tank on to someone who will appreciate that good fuel sending unit for what it really is. :o

Yeah, BassCliff has it right. That assembly is your sending unit for the fuel gauge. It's nice to have one in place, but if you are chopping/bobbing/stripping the bike down to bare minimums and getting rid of the fuel gauge, you can simply leave the wires from the sending unit disconnected. The extra few ounces of weight in that mechanism is not going to make a difference in performance. Along the same line, the float is not going to detract any from your useable fuel capacity, either. The mounting plate is also the perfect way to seal that hole. I would rather leave that in place than risk ruining the tank by welding a cover plate in there.

.

The tank is on my bike, And I didnt know if i needed or not since the gauges are all missing when i bought it, any other info u all can pass?

Buy a set of gauges with a fuel level gauge and plug those into your harness about where your coils are.
And plug the wires from the sender into the yellow/black and black(?) wires that end about where your fuel tank starts, under the seat, in the harness.
With any luck, you will now have a functional fuel gauge.
