A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Hey all, I think i'm having an issue with the petcock on my 79GS1000. I have one from a 80 GS1000, i know the carbs are different and was wondering if the petcocks are too. I could see them having different spring tentions or somthing but i'm not sure. thanks in advance -Bobby.

If it is truly a 1980 petcock it won't fit a 79' tank. Unless your tank is a 1980 as well. There are some other differences as well, the 80 has no reserve, different shape, etc....but they are both vacuum petcocks.

If both petcocks look the same, go for it. But make sure you test petcock's function after installation

odd, how they mount looks the same. the one on my 79 only has on and res. the other one has res., on and prime. Also the supply locations are different, the 79 is on the bottem and the other is on the side.

It's happened twice here on the sight in the last few weeks though, once to me personally. The bike is a 79' 1000 but has an 80' petcock on the tank. Turns out the tank had been replaced with a 1980 tank, same shape and colour scheme but different petcock bolt spacing.

ok thanks gents. guess i'll but a new one.

They are about $250.00 if you can find one.
Chuck Hahn has researched that a '77-'79 GS750E petcock will fit and about a third of the cost.
The hose routing is a bit different and will require a couple more inches of tubing.
Plenty of threads on the subject..

Exactly right. On a previous GS1000E I needed the tank replace sround 1985. The replacement tank was the correct PN and colour scheme for 1979 but when I went to change it I had to go back and order the newer petcock and delayed another week to order the part. I remember it well, l was not impressed.
