I bought a 1981 GS650E that was partially disassembled and am in the process of putting it back together, cleaning, repairing, etc. One thing that has me stumped is where to put the RR. I have the fuse blocks, ignitor (or whatever it is called on this model), etc. installed but cannot see where the RR should go. Can anyone help me with this?

This site has been a wonderful resource in this effort already. I have worked on a number of bikes but this is my first Suzuki ever.

Check out this thread:

http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/showthread.php?t=199649

Mark replaced his R/R with a MOSFET unit, and ended up putting it under the tail cowling. I think he might have a link there to a thread with pictures of the R/R location under the battery box.

On the 650G, there is a bracket that holds the ignitor and the R/R, which mounts under the airbox. not sure if you could adapt it to the 650E, though.

Thanks, but on this one the ignition module is located on the bottom of the battery box. Is this the wrong location for it?

I looked on the parts fiches, and they showed it facing forward. Front of battery box?

This one year model did not locate stuff in the same places as the G model, in particular the R/R.

Ok. Thanks. Am beginning to wonder if this is a replacement RR. Has only 3 yellow wires and a ground wire and seems larger than the pictures I saw in the post linked above.

It must have 3 stator input wires, a 12V output wire, and I have never seen one without a 5th, which is the ground wire.

mine is located on the side of the battery box towards the rear under the seat mine has 3 yellow wires a black a green and a red looks original but hard to say. cheers.closer inspection the green turns to black without pulling all the covers off cant see where it ends up.

Hi,

The manual should have diagrams with the locations of all the major components. The usual mounting spots are under the left side cover next to the fusebox or solenoid, and on the bottom of the battery box.

In case you missed it: New Members, CLICK HERE!! (You might find a manual among those links.)

Thank you for your indulgence,

Take a pic for us- suzuki R/R's are suspect, some aftermarket ones pitiful, so replace with honda unit (Shindengen). Lots of places to mount it. As mentioned, the shaft versions had it underneath air filter box. I have mine mounted under the rear support bracket for gas tank.

Your location sounds correct.
Your R/R is a Honda. The yellows are the stator inputs, the red is the 12V out, the green is ground, and the black is the sense wire, which goes to a 12V switched wire.

Thanks all. I finally found a photo that shows the RR on the back side of the battery box (in the manual under battery maintenance) if it is in fact a photo of the GS650E. I had looked through the manual on BikeCliff's site (great site by the way, I have been reading through most of the documents concerning this bike) and another manual I found elsewhere and had not seen the photo. My problem was that the threaded holes in the back of the battery box did not match the hole spacing on the RR I have.

I'm no expert, but I have an 82 of the same model and I'm pretty sure the location is below the side panel on the side of the battery box right under the circled area on the pic below, facing out to the side.

That's my $0.02

Schwartz, they must have moved it for 82. The U.S. did not get that model.
thensley, go to page 135 of the factory service manual. Look at the picture of the battery. You can clearly see the fins of the R/R on the back of the battery.

Hey, sorry I didn't see this thread sooner. The stock R/R bolts to the right side (facing the back of the bike) of the battery box. When I replaced my R/R with a Honda one, it was too large for the stock location and the bolt holes didn't line up so I ended up moving it to the rear cowling.

Here is where the R/R bolts up on the battery box.

It's a tight squeeze, even for the stock unit. (before I cleaned things up)

Thanks Marc. That is exactly where the manual shows it mounted. Which Honda unit did you go with? I ask because they came in two sizes; a bit larger than stock, and a lot larger than stock. On my GS, I used the larger one, elongated the mounting holes in the R/R, and mounted it in the stock position. But it was on the side, so height was not a factor.

Yes, that is the larger one. I prefer it due to better heat dissipation. Do you have a pic of where you actually mounted it so thensley can view it?
