I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

I just got a replacement r/r

it is a shindengen 233. it has thick: red, blk, 3yell
and
thin green and a thin brown

anybody know what do do with these two thin wires?

I know one of the thin wires should go to a hot lead, but....

Use a multimeter to check and see if the green wire and black wire are both connected internally to each other. IF not, see if the green wire is connected to the metal case (it may or may not be). Do the same for the brown and green. Finally check the brown and black to see if they are really one and the same. If you see any reading other than 0 ohms then they do different things and are not electrically the same connection.

The brown wire could be another output or even an unregulated output for some other accessory. I would have to see a wiring diagra from what it came off of to tell. I only buy 6 wire regulators for this task and only if they have 3 yellow, green, black and red.

The 3 yellows are obviously the stator wires. Ther red goes to the battery and the green wire is most likely the ground wire.

To safely determine which wire is the sense lead, connect a piece of wire to a fuse, then connect the wire to the 12 volt source you plan to use, easiest being the Orange/white wire going to the brake light switch. allow the black wire to touch the other end of the fuse and fire up the bike. If the black wire is another ground the fuse will open and no harm done. If the fuse remains OK check and see if the voltage is being regulated properly. if you get 13.9 or more at 5000 rpm your in good shape. IF you get 15.9 or more then try the brown wire.

Once you determine which one to use, tape off the unused wire so it does not get int trouble. Use a small fuse, under 5 amps, for the test.

here is a diagram from the the bike for this r/r

more help please

Thanks,

Brown is the trigger/12 volt sense wire and goes to a switched 12. Black is grounded and green is another ground that could go to the frame. The brown wire was also ran to the stator area to energize a field coil it seems.

Thank you both for the replies,

my next question is can ~this~ r/r be used for a GS application? or have I gotten an unusable part

:(

Well if the regulator controls the field coil in this regulator, it's maybe, i don't know yamaha's charging system, the reg may shunt current to ground, if so then you may be able to use it, if not then no...

I can check my son's 650 maxim if you like, but it may be better to get a different one.

Rustybronco,

it looks like the r/r may be hooked through a field coil. when I tes t the r/r on the bike, it does not regulate - as rpms incr, the v incr and does not stop at 14.8. or the r/r is no good?

any addl info appreciated

Arie, that is my suspect, although I haven't taken apart my sons yamaha, by the wiring diagram it's just like a car alternator you have to excite the
field to get the r/r to re-supply the battery (more or less current) I don't think the r/r is bad it just won't work for what you need i'd look for a more sutable replacement.
