A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

What is the PSI requirement for the average gun? I've noticed that when I use the blow gun on my little compressor it is able to maintain a nice consistent 75PSI. If the gun requirement is no higher than this I shouldn't have a problem with the small (8 gallon) capacity tank...

Regards,

Steve its the cfm rating that is the problem, anywere from 7.5 to 13.5 cfm for a hvlp gun, the old style non hvlp cup guns used less cfm's (4 to 8? cfm) but blew paint so hard at the surface (high pressure) that the paint would bounce off the surface of what you were painting and became over spray the new hvlps have a max of 10 psi at the tip less paint bouncing around therefore less over spray.
look at the cfm rating of your compressor at 40 psi, that will tell if its undersized when a compressor runs constantly you can have a problem with moisture in the air and that also will be a problem i just spray a little and let the compressor recover should not be a problem on small jobs but on completes like a car it WILL NOT do.

WOW
After going thru 9 pages , you guys have really given me an education.
Thanks. I may have to put some of these tips to practice.
Now a question, for rattle-can, what would you say would be the ideal weather conditions for a proper paint job??
Should I wait until summer is over??

Thanks for the clarification, Dale! I agree that my spraying will have to be "intermittent," with a chance for the compressor to recover. My CFM rating at 40PSI is only 4.5, but only drops to 3.7 at 90PSI, so I'm guessing that the gun that came with it ought to be ok with intermittent use. I was also planning to pick up a filter/separater before giving this a try, so I think I'll be ok on avoiding water or oil contamination.

Regards,

hmmm doesn't sound bad

I asked around in the DC area and the cheapest I found was a little over $500 from a gypsy... Normal shops wanted (I kid you not) $1,000.00 to complete the job. I have even had one of my bikes done for $100. It was great. I did all the prep and he shot it.

It seems it would be worth it for a forum member who paints to make good side money to paint. Not at $1,000 per job, but to offer a deal for forum members... Meaning to make up for a lower cost by recieving a large volume of business from this board.

I paint... i'm PPG certified... work at a collision shop in Hershey Pa. If ne body needs something done let me know...

Steve i'm not trying to discourage you i have painted completes with a 2 h.p. compressor years ago, paint a little, recover, paint some more ect. in fact i painted the race car hood (about 3'x4') a month or so ago with a hvlp and a 1 h.p. compressor so it CAN be done.

70- 75 degrees low humidity.

if your riding wait till fall, the down time will drive you nutz.

I love my sharp gravity feed HVLP for base coats, but I still use the old devilbis JGA for higher solids products. It lays clear coat down like glass. Having said that, i am going to try and do the hood of my truck with rattle cans, but i am still using base/clear to do it.

thats why i keep my old devilbiss mbc, high solids and clears wastes paint though.

Not at all discouraged, thanks! Better to have ALL the information and be prepared to do the job "right" with the tools I have, then to make the mistake of trying to use them in a way that will result in spray problems.

Only problem is I'm not riding until fall.
Not with the clutch, carbs and gaskets I'm doing.
I was thinking of painting my fairing before I mount it permanently.
