Rattle in the clutch area? I think...

Ok. I had posted a couple days ago about some noises my bike makes. After a lots of closer listening with the stethoscope I may be able to better describe what's happening, therefore maybe getting some good insight.

Heres the symptoms: When I first fire up the bike there are no noises. Once the bike gets fully warmed up, out come the sounds. There are 2 different sounds I'm definitely hearing. Both sounds immediately disappear once the bike gets above 1500 or so rpm's.

1.: A rattling sound that seems to be mostly eminating around the clutch area. However, it makes no difference whether the clutch is in or out. Or if the bike is in gear or neutral. As long as the rpm's are around idle the noise is there. It almost sounds like 2 gears intermittently grazing one another. And I can hear it while I slowly let out the clutch to take off. But it goes away once rpm's rise. I can feel it in the bars.

2.: A ticking or somewhat chirping sound that basicly is present at exactly the same times that the rattle sound is present. Although this sound just doesn't seem to be in one certain area. There is no steady pace to it. It is intermittent. Only there when warmed up. And immediately goes away above 1500 or so rpm's. You know how on some vehicle if you put the engine under heavy load at high speed they will make a rattle sound (some refer to it as valve rattle or maybe predetonation I believe). It sounds like that tone, but only happens at below 1500 rpms and never any other time.

I never hear either noise while riding the bike. It sounds and feels very smooth. Sound number one can be felt in the bars when at idle (warmed up). The clutch does barely slip at high rpm's, and althought the noise is the same whether i have the clutch pulled in or not, could this be a clue that it is related to maybe a loose hub or something? Or does the fact that the lever doesn't change the sounds rule that out?

I took some decent video capturing both sounds, which both seem to always happen at the same time. I'll try to upload it after work. I wish I could let one of the gurus hear it in person. This bike really seems to run well. And I like to find out if its just a normal old bike thing to not worry about. Or if it needs fixed immediately.

Hi,

Clutch rattle? I'm not super-familiar with clutches but perhaps someone will come along and elaborate.

1) Loose clutch hub nut
2) Worn damper springs (on the back of the basket) or clutch springs (on the plates).
3) Loose rivets on the clutch basket.

Someone posted up some nice pictures of his welded clutch, but I couldn't find them. Sorry.

Some have opted to have the clutch basket rivets welded. Others replace the basket. If it's just the springs, have a look here for a quick fix...

These are noisy engines anyway, but check it out just in case.

Thank you for your indulgence,

Had the same symptons and tore into my clutch today to tihen the clutch hub nut.

I put an air gun on it and was much quieter at idle but the fibres are worn so need to order up a set and dive into it again

Did you ever find out what was causing the rattle Jonzilla? Mine just started making a very similar sound, out of the blue, and now I can't even get it to start.

I have yet to find the cause of the rattle. I seriously suspect the clutch hub possibly needing tightening. This bike is an ongoing project for me. I have plans to replace the clutch springs to attempt to fix minor clutch slippage at high rpms. When I do that, I plan to tighten everything up and take a close look and everything.

I took a really good (you could really hear the sound well) video but it was taken with an HD camcorder and I couldn't figure out how to compress the video to post it. I have just been riding the bike the way it is for now, since the noise is fairly subtle. But it's definitely there. And I will def post up hear once I hopefully find the problem.

This bike also has a slight miss at WOT around 6k. It sputters and then "catches up" at about 7k. Thats a whole other issue of course.
