I have a red 83 GK that I've sat in for about a year and now I'm finally getting around to rebuilding it. It's cosmetically awful, but I have all the pieces except the lower part of the fairing. The boxes have some dents and scrapes on them, and I'm probably going to just leave it that way. The frame has some rust. But it's not bad. Yet. It probably ran two years ago and I know the carbs were rebuilt around then too, so I'm kind of hoping if I just cure it's electrical problems it wouldn't likely need much else. As it sits I need to rebuild the wiring harness, replace the coils and rectifier. A new stator probably would be a great idea too. The coils are shot and so is the inverter. The harness ended up in a few pieces somehow but I have 90% of it. I have the schematic so rebuilding it should be fairly straightforward. I'm not worried about that.
It also needs some new valve cover gaskets and of course a new seat. Last I knew it was running well but didn't like charging the battery. I need to check the splines on the final drive, but it doesn't look like replacements are all that bad if I needed one.
I think I'm just going to fix whatever is broken and leave it as a rat bike. I like the bags so I'll probably just leave them. If I like it enough I'll probably end up stripping it and repainting it, but I'm ok with just making it functional.
Dynalite coils off eBay. Are they ok? Is there much advantage to dropping in electronic ignition? The cost is 2-3x as much.
Can I just use a goldwing rectifier/inverter? That's what I have heard and that might be a fairly economical option. I'd trust Honda OEM over cheap Chinese stuff but I'm open to anything that works and is cheap.
Asides from my shocks (still good) a tune up and a good fluid flush, what else should I look at doing to this bike? I'm fairly sure these run with timing chains, so no belt to worry about.
Mileage is 45k for what it's worth. I only paid $400 for the bike and I want to make it a challenge to fix it as cheaply possible. But I don't want to buy parts that will just fail. I'm looking at a minty naked goldwing this weekend that also needs a little work so this is just going to be a fun project more than anything right now.
I was tempted to strip it all the way down to the frame and repaint the frame but I'm unsure if the little rust on it is even anything to worry about. I've seen ratrods looking much, much worse to be honest and I think that's what this one's going to become. The tank is pretty awfully rusty though so I'm on the fence.
