DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

It's been a while since I have updated the thread:

This is what the engine looks like now:

So far I have:
lapped the valves
replaced valve stem seals
had exhaust stud drilled and helicoiled
honed the cylinders
aggressively degreased the engine and soda blasted the head and cylinders (while removed)
painted crank, head, valve cover and breather cover
installed headlight brackets (had a busted vetter fairing)
removed rust on most every part I could find that had rust (product called "Rust Remover" works awesome)
degreased and removed rust from most every bolt that was removed with parts tumbler
Cleaned carbs thoroughly (dipped in barrymans and then hand cleaned every passage with wire and carb cleaner spray)
rejetted carbs for airbox to remove pods
bought airbox and currently refurbishing it
replaced all non-usable rubber grommets on frame
spot painted frame with VHT rollbar and suspension paint
set valve clearances (headache)
tested wiring harness to be sure it was all still working
sanded and repainted battery box (rusted)
attempted to clean rust from tank (needs more work done)

I then reinstalled the engine last night:

The engine has been out for so long, I was so excited to be putting it back in. I almost forgot to reisntall the drive shaft, but noticed just before I got the engine wiggled all the way in.

Im waiting on carb boots from PartsOutlaw and should be able to push the start button soon. I still have cosmetic things to work on but I'll wait until I get the engine started.

So far it looks great, I'm waiting on the carb boots. The email from Partsoutlaw says it could be mid March. I'm wondering how I can get the two tone back on the tank and side covers when I paint it. That will be the hard part.

Jdion, this beast is coming along great!! My head and jugs are getting blasted this weekend. Then hopefully my carbs. (Sure pays off having Napa connections for a free blasting ;) ) Then hone and gap rings and on from there. I will be giving it a fresh coat of engine gloss black and I know a guy with insane polishing skills for the side covers. He's a perfectionist so I can assume they will end up mirrored :D I can't wait to see your finished project!

Some 1/8 masking tape will get your lines, and plenty of professional input lol. (I don't have any of that)

I think I may end up going with a solid color on the tank and covers, just because I know I should be able to get a better result by myself. If I try doing a two tone on my one it will probably end up looking like abstract art.

I'm going to hold off on attempting paint until I am done with moving. I will go with Plasti Dip in a two-tone, so I will let you know how it comes out haha.

The best part about Plasi-dip is the fact that you can use any clear coat over it
