Rebuilt Carbs, No start. Only The Inner Two Carbs Are Getting Fuel, after cranking for a few i cracked the bowl drains open and the two outer are bone dry. i pulled the plugs and theyre dry as a bone as well. stumped. please help. thank you.

well not sure what bike, or what carbs you have.....but

did you put them back together in the right sequence, are the fuel tees back on ?

put the petcock on Prime for a bit while cranking, and if she starts then put it back to on...

.

sorry about lack of info. 1980 gs850 gl. tees are on. i tried switching petcock with no luck. thinking maybe something did work its way into the tees clogging them up. pulled petcock and discovered part of the filter was torn. guessing that needs replaced now as well. any ideas are appreciated. was riding this bike no problem until i did the rebuild. furthermore the reason i rebuilt was because of old fuel left in carbs. dont know if thats helps any. as far as reassembly i followed a pictorial from on here seems like everything went smooth to me.. is there anywhere else it could be plugged that would starve the inner carbs and motor of fuel??? still stumped. ha.

The only thing I can think of is that the fuel tees are clogged or you don't have enough gas in the tank :).

sounds like 1 + 4 carbs are swapped. highly unlikely both fuel joints between 1+2 and 3+4 get blocked at the same time. look at no.4 carb at the fuel inlet channel, is it blocked off or open on the outer side of the carb? if so the carbs are in the wrong positions

Not quite sure how that concept would work. :-k

There is only one Tee in the fuel line and it's between the two carbs that already have gas.
Only The Inner Two Carbs Are Getting Fuel, ...

Dropdead, you say you "rebuilt" the carbs, did you do a full "strip and dip" rebuild and also replace all the o-rings?
If not, I would recommend starting there to eliminate a very common cause of carbutetor problems.

.

i rebuilt each carb one at a time and put it back on the rail so i know there is no order mix up, as far as dipping them, no. scrubbed, sprayed, repeat. by o rings is this something that would have not come with the rebuild kit? i used what i got with my rebuild kit nothing more. also with the middle two getting fuel in the bowls shouldnt it still be making it to the plugs? thanks again everybody

so unless you did a dip of the carb bodies, and the jets and so on, then it seems your going to be taking them all apart again and dipping them for at least a 24 hour soak, you need to fully pull them apart, only way you can be sure all is clean, somewhere there is something plugged. follow the carb cleaning tutorial available and you should be fine.

this is a strip down...

i did have them stripped but it looks as though to avoid un-needed posting i will soak them and try again another day. ugh, i really hope this does the trick. i really suck at diagnosing things and have a feeling its something more(it always is) than just simple carb trouble. also a little off topic in a way but how many jets on these carbs are adjustable? just the air mix on the front where the intake hooks up correct? cause i put those 2.5 turns out and all the others are just seated. thanks.

if you followed the rebuild tutorial properly then you will know that you have fuel mixture screws as well, at the FRONT, the air mix screws which you have set to 2.5 turns are at the REAR.
the fuel pilot screws need to be turned out as well otherwise you will get no fuel at idle speed, which would explain dry plugs on all cylinders.

however, this will have no bearing on the 2 outer carbs not filling up with fuel.

The rebuild tutorial i used made no mention of any jet settings. sorry.

which one did you use, maybe we can point you towards a better one :)

AH, hang on, have you got CV carbs? if so then me bad.......yes you only have 1 mixture screw. sorry if i mislead you.....
meanwhile, if it is not the rebuild tutorial you already used, take a looky at this one. very good detailed instructions.........

Ok I know there is only 1 TEE but there is a pipe that goes between each carb, this is what I meant. Correct my terminology.

If you swap the carbs, then the throttle arms that go to the butterflies will be on the wrong side. I find this nearly impossible to mess up.

i posted that before i realised it could be CV carbs he has, i did point that out in an earlier post.

Have you checked your float heights on the bone-dry carbs? I did that and got mine running. Check out bass cliff's website for the float heights.

Have you checked the bowl vents that are open to the atmosphere,I believe there are 4 seperate tubes (hoses) that hook to the bowls that are the fuel bowl vents. Unless they have been removed etc. If hooked together, blocked off etc. the bowls won't fill up properly. If you had compressed air,Turn the regulator way down for test purposes, remove all the needle and seat assys.and apply some air or spray carb cleaner into your fuel inlet tee and block off the two inside carbs and see if there is a restriction between the #2 & #3 carbs and the outside #1 & #4 carbs. Like said in the previous post I also believe it is impossible to exchange the #1 & #4 carb bodies. :-k
