Recommended Mods/Upgrades/Removal?

Hello,

Just bought my first GS, a '77 GS750. It has sat for a couple years, had a few parts removed from it, and needs a lot of TLC. Due to it sitting and the shape it is in, I am in the process of yanking the motor to give it a good cleaning and inspection. I am wondering what are the common or most recommended mods or upgrades to do these guys while I am digging around. The electrical is pretty bad, so I plan to redo a lot or all of that. I plan to strip as much unneeded things as possible, would like it as bare as possible. Any suggestions?

Use OEM gaskets. Replace all the various gaskets and seals, including those in the tach drive and cam chain tensioner.

Bottle brush hone the cylinders as long as there isn't more than .001" out or round or taper in the cylinders, and use new OEM rings. Replace the valve stem seals.

Just basic stuff.

And when you redo your electrics, consider upgrading to a series-type R/R, like the SH775.

The mods are endless, first thing I always do before digging into an engine is just to get it running, most of these old bikes have neglected maintenance, I would start with the basic's before dumping any money into it, ultra sonic clean carbs, new carb and intake boot o-rings, valve adjustment, etc etc etc,

Welcome to the forum. What do you mean by unneeded things?

These bikes are about as basic as you can get. Are your plans to cafe or bob the bike? A dirt bike is about as bare as you can get with a bike, basically no lights, controls and mirrors. Most states require those things unless it is for off road use only, such as a track bike would be.
