    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Removing Paint off of Aluminum

Hey guys I have another question.

The GS 550 I picked up this weekend needs some major attention in the appearance department. I'm waiting on parts so I want to try to clean it up...

Here is the story: It looks like some took a silvery metallic paint and just went to town painting everything! The engine and everything has this crappy looking paint on it. We sprayed the bike yesterday at a car wash and some of the paint came off, but most is still there.

Is there a product that get take this crappy paint off but not destroy the aluminum? I'm not looking to use aircraft paint stripper.

Umm.... why not? It works great, IMHO.

Otherwise, I'm pretty sure any paint stripper will work and not destroy the aluminum. Well, unless you leave it on for hours and hours. But otherwise, you should be OK. And, of course, it isn't going to leave the aluminum bright and shiny. You only get THAT with hard work... :D

I know you said you didnt want to do it, but two words: AIRCRAFT STRIPPER. It wont harm the alu, and it will take that crappy paint off RIGHT NOW. You can even get it in a brush on style if youre afraid of overspray from a can hurting your frame paint or something..

Other option is carb cleaner... that stuff will eat paint too..

Dont forget about brake fluid. :D Seriously though aircraft stripper is the shizznit.
 
+1 on the paint stripper, just stripped the Suzuki factory coating off mine recently.
 
would paint thinner or aircraft stripper be better to get the old clear coat junk off the side covers so they can be polished up?
 
Aircraft stripper. Paint thinner won't do a thing to that clear coat but stink up your fingers.
