I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Repairing transmission on 83 550 L

Well I started this with trying to figure out what was wrong with a frozen transmission some time back. I was able to get a complete tranmission, minus the case, from a 85 off of e-bay for $28 shipped to me. I pulled the engine, split the cases and then found the broken shift fork, broken dogs off one of the gears, and a completely shattered second gear.

I ordered parts, namely gaskets and o-rings so I could put it back together once the full transmission was in place. Good thing was all the gaskets and o-rings were still available and could be ordered, and at a cost of only $48. Bad news, the oil pan gasket was on back order.

It's finally been released for shipment and as of today, I have everything that I ordered and now I'm ready to finish getting it put back together.

The reason for this post is that I've had some interest in this project from a couple members. So this is to act as a "heads-up" for you. I will be putting this engine back together and taking pictures. I've had requests for pictures of how hard it is to pull the engine, which I have already done, but I will post pictures of when I put it back in, and hopefully this will answer those questions.

Right now I have the new gear set in. I still need to swap out the shift forks and the shift drum. The hardest part so far has been the splitting of the cases. But a few taps with the dead-blow hammer and she popped loose, and from there it was just getting the crank to let go on the correct side and working it off.

So stay tuned, as I complete this, I'll try to document this.

Did you have to dissasemble the top end? Or can you split just the lower case and acces the transmission?

Nope, just split the cases. The bottom comes off and then you can access the whole transmission.

I got the transmission gear sets replaced and the shift forks. I have the cases back together. I had ordered a oil pan gasket. This was back ordered and finally came in. I figure about 30 minutes more of clean up and to put the oil pan back on, then it'll be ready to re-install into the frame.

I'll post pictures then. Should have it back in the frame tomorrow afternoon, and maybe back together then.

Then just have to wait on the son to get me oil, and a new chain and sprockets. Should be ready to go after that.

Please post the pictues, and any tips you have. I have a ridiculous amount of backlash in my transmission, and I have a bid on a transmission right now so I will be changing it over soon. Did you need any special pullers or tools to do the job?
