Greetings, all;
A few weeks ago I got some advice from forum members re. replacing the snapped throttle cable on my bike. What a bear of a job! Seat & gas tank off, rear brake reservoir, air box off, pulled the rubber boots between the plenum and the carbs, and pull the carbs themselves! Whew!

Now the problem lies in re-installing the rubber connections between the plenum and the backs of the carbs. It got me to thinking whether I can use small individual air filters
(see, for example: https://www.partsnmoreonline.com/PNMSite/XS1100 15-0037 CHROME CAP AIR FILTER.htm )

Am I stuck with the OEM air intake system (which is going to be a major pain in the *** to get back together - I honestly don't know if I can do it) or can I go to individual cone-type filters on the back of each carb in place of the plenum?

Thanks in advance

I'm in a similar situation, rebuilding the carbs on my GS550. I am NOT going to deal with that miserable OEM plenum. I ordered a set of UniPods (foam filters) from denniskirk.com for $34.99. Was going to get K & N, but a set of those goes for $160. I'll rejet if I have to; worth it for the easier carb access.

Anyone want to buy a used plenum? Would be good for target practice or maybe a nice toy for your dog :)

good luck,
Debby

hehe, I took the airbox off of my 1100 a few months ago and never could get it back on. Next time I'm home I'll figure it out. It isn't worth the trouble to get pod filters in my mind. If you want a different exhaust etc.... then maybe.

Good idea i never knew about UNI but now that i do forget K&N who wants to spring for 135.00 for filters when 40.00 sounds alot better lol

so question is: do you have to use the stock air box or can you simply use an after-market chromed air filter. if so, any suggestions/links?

If you go with pods you will have to rejet.
To get the stock boots back on, I suggest getting some plumbers silicone from the hw store. Lube the inside of the boots lightly, and it will help slip them on. Just my two cents worth.

I'd be careful with those cheap filters. if you plan on buying a dynojet jetting kit, they're made for K&N filter, and won't work with your cheapo's, which are much more restrictive. this restriction doesn't show up at idle or partial throttle, but give it a good amount of gas at rpm's above 4 or 5k, and you'll get some extremely rich conditions and a horrible loss of power.

Just put a little grease around the air intake boots and heat them up with a hair dryer and they will be easier to put on.If you dont have a clymers manual you should get one.You should have been able to put a throttle cable on without removing the carbs or airbox. All you need to remove is the gas tank and pull up on the throttle plate with your finger and remove the barrel that is connected to your cable from the throttle plate holder.

If i were you guys, i'd look into the k&n drop in filter... it allows you to keep your stock airbox and you don't have to rejet...

My bike was running a little rich and i installed one.. left the airbox lid off and i picked up 3 mph in the 1320...

Also pulls strong up top now..

I don't know why everybody says that UNI or Emgo pods are crap.

K&N breathes better, true - but they also let more particulate matter into your carburetors.

ANY AIR FILTER CAN BE PROPERLY JETTED. Installing a jet kit is retuning your carburetors to match your particular intake, exhaust, and elevation. Saying that you can't jet to Emgo pods is just like saying you can't jet to a Kerker pipe. All exhausts are different, all intakes are different. If you can jet to a modified airbox running off-the-shelf filter guaze, you can bet your biscuits you can jet to non-K&N pods.

K&N is not the end-all of performance filters.

But back on subject - if you're wanting to go with pod filters simply because the stock airbox is a hassle, don't do it. If you think fighting with the airbox is a pain, you're in for a world of torture if you try to rejet your motorcycle just to make your airbox job "simpler".

But this whole thing begs the question of why you had to remove your carbs just to replace a throttle cable...?

Good luck - and you're not the first person with this problem. Grease and heat....
