    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Replacing ignition switch on 81 GS850G with aftermarket switch question

Has anyone replace the stock ignition switch with an aftermarket one?

the problem in question is most aftermarket switches I find seem to have a 3 terminals to connect to the wiring harness and the stock ignition has 4 wires coming out of it.

My wiring diagram sucks and is too small to read and I can't determine what the 4 wires on the stock harness power and if I can make a 3 position switch work for my application.

This is not the first time I've made modifications to a wiring harnesses but without being able to know whats what I'm stuck being able to make an educated decision on what I can make work.



So if you also have a readable wiring diagram that would be awesome.

ignition wiring should be same as on yours, but headlight switch might be different- some models had on/off and sometimes switches get changed over the years.
 
Yeah the hand controls were pretty easy to figure out. But I just couldn't determine where the ignition switch started on my other diagram. Looking at it briefly it looks as if I can just eliminate the "park" option of the ignition.

Rocketmann, did you ever figure out if the 3 terminal will work? I believe I'm having the same problem you are.

I doubt if anyone ever used it in the history of motorcycling.
 
I purchased the Emgo brand ignition switch for my 1980 GS750E and it was plug and play. Looks and acts like original switch, everything works, no mods were necessary - 4 wires in and 4 wires out. Paid $21.50 US delivered on EBay on one of the links you have listed. Just make sure you get the switch that fits your year and model bike.
