DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Replacing the front master cylinder

On my '82 GS650GL I've got two problems (amongst many!):
  1. The mirror has snapped off (while trying to remove it), with no way of extracting the remainder
  2. The PO damaged the threads that holds the master cylinder to the handlebars
I can live with the latter problem (as I've got it as tight as it will go), but combined with the former I'm thinking about swapping out the front master cylinder completely and wondered if there were any suggested replacements?

If it were me I would drill and tap the handlebar strap holes larger then drill out and use a helicoil on the mirror hole.

If you want to get a new master cylinder you should look around to see what you like. A used one from online or salvage yard might be the best bet. There are 4 things you need to watch for.

1) make sure the master cylinder is designed to mount on the size handlebars you have.
2) make sure the mirror thread is the right direction (some have reverse threads)
3) make sure the master cylinder is designed for the amount and size of calipers you have. (some are designed for single calipers, some are designed for dual calipers but the actual calipers might be smaller bore than yours etc.)
4) make sure the master cylinder is designed for the type of handlebars. Some clip on style will be at an angle if you try to mount them to a regular handlebar.

Mike's XS sells nice new ones in different bore sizes. No worries about sludge or clogs.

Funny you should ask. I've just ordered a modern Suzuki MC for my '82 Gs1100. I went into the Suzuki showroom and found that the 650 V-Strom has a similar MC to my bike, has twin disks like mine and sits about the same. As Razor suggested, I checked that the bars are 7/8th, the angle is about the same, ie not slanted for clip-on bars, and the new one even has an adjustable lever.

It should be just what I need to improve the lever feel on my bike. My original MC was toast so I had put on an era-correct GS1100 MC but the lever has to be pulled right back to the bars to work. Everything else is good - new lines, completely overhauled callipers, etc. The brakes work, and work well, but I want a better lever feel. I also just received new discs. They should help I hope!

I'm kinda partial to being able to stop.
