Results from fuel filter

Thanks! That's great.

So it's just a matter of figuring out how to get the float bowls off while the carbs are still on the bike, eh?

Well, you can just unscrew the screws in the floatbowl, but the filter is in the carb body. If that is the problem, It would be extremly difficult to disassemble everything upside down.

On top is the float. Under the float is the retaining ring that holds the float needle onto the seat. So youd have to remove the float, then unscrew the ring and carefully remove it.

Easier said than done, but Id just remove the carbs

Mike, just take the carbs off! It's way easier in the long of it.

I might as well. I'm going to be doing a vacuum synch, so I want to bench synch 'em first.

Mike, I might have those o-rings that I did't use in a bank I had apart last summer.Let me know if you need them and I'll mail the to ya.Ended up buying the valves and they had the o-rings on em.Let me know,Don

Will do. Thanks, man.

I can tell you this,...since I sprayed that carb cleaner in there, the bike HAS been acting differently.

Now when the choke is on, the engine will bog down a bit if I try to give too much throttle. At least at first. After it's warmed a bit, I can give it throttle with the choke on, when it starts to die.

As far as I know, it's supposed to bog down if you give it gas with choke, so this is encouraging. I'm gonna throw some more down there tonight or tomorrow, depending on when I get time.

I'm hoping my mercury sticks will arrive soon, so I can do a vacuum synch and have a better starting point from which to diagnose things.

Thanks guys,
Mike

So Mike, I can't really follow here? is the fuel filter inline now or not? Is it better or worse without it? Sounds to me like the carbs need a good going over.

Fuel filter is off. I just put that on for one startup to see if I was getting crud from my tank.

I'm thinking the carbs def. need a good going over, but Earl said I should vacuum synch them first.

I don't want to go through the painstaking process of taking them off and putting them back on the bike, but at this point, I'm ready to do just that and be done with it.

It's really not that daunting of a job. First time will seem it but I swear to you, it is not a big deal. The best time saving advice I can give you is this simple tip, if Earl, or Keith or one of the other pro's on here suggest something, just do it. If you keep trying to come up with your own variations you will waist their time as well as your own. My rejet would have been done inside of one week if I would just have listened to Keith and got the jet kit he told me to get instead of insisting it could be done with the Mikuni parts.

Absolutely. I've been listening to Earl every step of the way. Don't make a move without him at this point. He says I should just do the vacuum synch first, so that's where I'm headed.

If only these stupid mercury sticks would show up.

I bought mine at the beginning of the week from Dennis Kirk. Arrival time anytime between now and the end of next week. You'd think a big site like that wouldnt need 5 days for order processing ;)

I used to be TERRIFIED of carbs. Fact is, you just need to jump in to it. Take your time, work slowly, and use the guide on this site. I printed it up in color and keep it in a binder at my work space. By the end of the last carb you'll be assembling/disassembling everything without even needing the binder. Have fun! :D

Breaking them down and cleaning them doesn't scare me at all. I did the 450's over the winter and it was fun. It's the removal/installation process that I just don't want to tackle.

But I will, if it comes to that.

Dennis Kirk is actually pretty fast,I think I had my order in like 3 days.Granted I'm in NE and they're in MN. The mercury ones for the $ are a dang good set.Just remember not to rev the engine too high while they're on!Hey JC did you get your carbs together yet?I'm with ya Mike it does stink pulling all that crap off.If you end up pulling the carbs off you might think about adj. the valves unless it's been done recently.I've had my bike apart so much it's almost second nature. Don

Yeah, the valves will be the next thing after I get the carbs sorted. I did still have a set of those o-rings, too. Thanks for the offer.

Don't forget that inconsistant idle problems are often due to the carb isolator O-rings drying out. Made a huge difference on my bike.

Carb isolator o-rings? I'm not familiar. Might they go by a different name?

Not quite yet. Unfortunately Carb #4 was completely messed up. PO had ruined the threads of the carb body. So I had to buy a #4 body. In essence, I just bought another set :D

Almost there, just waiting on a few parts. Polishing diaphragm covers until then to pass the time ;)
