RPM with full choke

What RPM should a 1980 GS 550L run with the choke knob pulled fully up?

How hot is the engine and the air temp? They do rev up, some more than others. The RPM will go way up as the engine warms up.

Hi,

After just a few seconds the engine starts to warm up. With a full choke my bike will get to 4000 rpm if I let it. I rarely start with full choke but I always feather the choke back down as the revs increase, keeping it at 2500 rpm or less as it warms up while I put on my helmet and gloves. Once I'm underway I will turn off the choke after a mile or two, before I get on the freeway.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

I agee, it will get absurdly high.

Each of my bikes is different in the amount of "choke" that is necessary to start it, but I have found the "sweet spot" that allows me to keep it under 2000 rpm (usually about 1500) before putting it in gear and riding off.

"Choke" is off by the time I get into second gear. :p

Hi Steve,

"Choke" is off by the time I get into second gear. :p

I'll wager that you don't have stoplights every other block when you start your commute. Otherwise, I could turn the choke off in second gear too. It's embarrassing to have your engine die at a stop light. :o

I'll use just enough choke to let it idle at 1500 or so, until I get through a few stoplights.

All the best to you and yours,

Cliff

The "choke" on these bikes is not a choke at all in the traditional sense, but rather a "fuel enrichment circuit". It's a series of plungers which allow an enriched fuel/air mixture in. The added fuel helps the combustion start; the added air gets your revs up.

I'll wager that you don't have stoplights every other block when you start your commute.
When I am home, if I turn left out the driveway, the first light is about 200 feet away. If I turn right, the first light is two blocks away.

Here in NY, I fire it up behind the hotel, idle out behind the restaurant next door, and get to the first light. If it's not off by then, the "choke" is off by the time I get into second gear. Absatively, posilutely no problems with dying at lights anywhere on the trip.

That's exactly why I always put "choke" inside the quote marks. :D

Thank you for the answer to my question. Your answer was helpful.

when fully warmed up it should DIE

when cool enough to touch, the rpm's should jump it up to 3000 RPMs(maybe a little more-5K) and you should take choke away from it to maintain 2000

blip the throttle occasionally until the engine has a strong feel and as it warms up the idle should come to 1000~1100 with NO choke

that is how it should work

I agree with Basscliff, I usually keep my choke on for a little while down the road....NOT fun to stall at traffic lights!
Not gonna take the chance.

My 750 will allow me to take the choke off in about 10-20 seconds....it's usually Off before I step into 1st gear.

Both of my bikes rev to atleast 4-6k with Choke On Full.

Just Start the bike with Full Choke, once it fires up, it's gonna rev sky high, so be ready! And right as the revs swing up past 3k, quickly bring it Down to around 2-2.5k.

Does it mean something is too rich if the RPMs never climb above 1500 when the choke is on and the engine is cold?

On my bikes, if I apply too much "choke" to start, the engine will run at lower speeds.
As I feather it toward half-way, the speed will increase, then decrease.
I note that highest cold idle speed position and use that as my maximum.
My preferred setting will be a bit less than that, to keep speed below 2000 rpm.
