There should be 2 small washers as well that are going to be important, I believe the proper order for those on the mixture screw, from top to bottom is: spring, washer, o-ring. without the washer to give the spring a solid base you may have the same situation all over again. I am pretty sure that is the order of things, it's been a while, I think there may be a pick in the carb rebuild tutorails on BikeCliff's website.
I'll take another look after I remove them from the cleaner. The o-rings are on the very edge next to the slot for the screwdriver. There were no washers, and no springs are readily visible. Maybe when they are cleaner I'll see them stuck in the bore. I Googled this and found at least two different styles, one with washers and the o-ring on the shoulder, and one without and the o-ring next to the slot. It will be late next week when I reassemble them and continue. I'm convinced they were assembled this way in 1980 by Suzuki. I'll keep the forum informed of the results. Thanks , gs450sjip
