    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I've got some minor rust on a few chrome parts and the V of my frame on another one of my bikes... any reccomendations as to how I can get rid of this stuff?

Rust is just one of the things you've just got to deal with on these old beauties. I'd suggest you get a good chrome polish and get it polished up as best you can. Depending upon the damage and how much you care, you can get it re-chromed.

I had a Harley-Davidson Lowrider that I had a bunch of stuff chromed on and it wasn't terribly expensive...although I did shop very carefully for price; some shops charge way more than others.
 
Flitz works great on the chrome stuff and probably on the painted stuff. You'll also need a lot of elbow grease.
 
I also had the bottom of my boot rub up against the exhaust... any tips for getting that crap off? will steel wool scratch the chrome?
 
Try CLR, then chrome polish.

I use some stuff called Evapo-Rust. Bought it at Auto-Zone, but you can get it on line as well. Works best if you can soak the part. Have had good luck soaking a paper towel, wrapping that around the rust, and then covering with plastic wrap overnight. It's good in that it doesn't etch the metal just dissovles the rust. Then I follow up with chrome polish/wax.
I keep a can around just for tossing screws and bolts into whenever I'm working on the bike (like when ain't I working on the bike:-D). After a couple of hours, maybe overnight for the worst ones, they look almost new.

Heat the exhaust up a bit and then take something like an old wooden spatula and scrape the softened rubber off. Any remains should come off easily with chrome polish.

Don't use steel wool on mirror-polished chrome, they won't be mirror-polished anymore.

For chrome bolt caps remove the rust and then put some clear coat on them - keeps them prettier longer. Rustolium has rust-preventing clear coats that are decent.

Thanks for the tip. I'm going to pick up some of this stuff. There really are some good chemicals out there these days. I've been using some stuff sold by Jasco called Metal Etch and Metal Primer and it really does work to eat off rust. It's a phosphate product of some sort and it leaves the surface with a film that protects the metal for a couple of weeks. That Evapo Rust looks even better so I'll try that this time since my stock has run out of the other stuff.

I use this stuff, its the best I have found at removing rust. The Nano polish is so much better then Mothers ever thought it was!!!
Evapo-Rust I followed an earlier thread on this and they are right, it is awsome if you can soak the item overnight. Another good thing is that you just pour the stuff right back into its bottle without the ick residue of course :-D Its a little pricey but I think it has awsome fuel tank cleaning possabilities because it wont harm the petcock.
