Pod Filter dilemma

Pod Filter dilemma

I recently resurrected an 83 1100E from barn state. I tried a cheapie set of conical pod filters and absolutely could not get it to run right. Jetted perfectly (Dyna Stage III with a Kerker pipe and Dyna ignition) with the filters off, but could not get it to work with them on. I broke down and popped the bucks for a set of genuine K&N ovals and had it screaming in about three tries. Have been getting perfect plug checks ever since.

The only type of carbs that work with pods are the slide carbs. The ones with the diaphrams, the ones used in later model bikes will not work with pods. So if you have a 77 or 78 gs the pods will work, as they will with any other mechanical slide style carbs. The VM carbs absolutly work with pods.

Welcome to the forum ..

Care to show us your 83 ?

D@mn! You mean my '83 with stock CV (diaphragm) style carbs hasn't been running for the past 30,000 miles?

What idiot are you getting your information from?!! I have been installing pods & jetting bikes since the 70s & haven't found a single bike that didn't carburate CLEANER & make more POWER with pods! ESPECIALLY the CV carbs! They want just about as much air as you can give them! Ray.

CV's don't run the best with just jetting with pods. YOu need to do some venturi drilling to make them work right. They are not bolt and go.

and JabberJoe, Welcome to the site. How come you dont post more? Its isn't from curtious responeses like the last one is it?

OH yeh, anyone wants stock boxes i have lots you can have for 50.00.

Actually, they ARE bolt & go if you install the jet kit according to INSTRUCTIONS. The slide drilling is IN the instructions.

Did you mean "It isn't from courteous responses like the last one is it?" Ray.

sick em ray!!
i have been biting my tounge or maybe i should say fingers for a while on this topic...
all i will say is WOW!!!
keep buying those junk a$$ emgo's for 7 dollars each..
those things are more restrictive than an airbox.
jet kits are a no brainer..no tinkering...install and go.
i feel a little better now:)
and for the record..
pod's are the alien things that get hatched, right? close encounters maybe??
i like the word(s) air filters...ahhhhhh, thats better.

I appreciate the check, I prefer you pay your debts.
Don't you mean "too" bad? I don't need "spellcheck", I know how to spell. I also don't return parts I buy from people without them telling me to send them back. I still have them here & will GLADLY send them back to you. I never said they were refundable, that was your choice. Ray

Thank you Ray. That was my next question. Just didn't make any sense to me why pods wouldn't actually be better than the stock box but I only have realistic experience with pods and mechanical carbs. Although my '80 GS1000G will be going to CV and pods this coming Summer, hopefully.

+1! The CV's have a few more components to dial in but work fine.....
if the guy doing the work/testing is doing his part.:)

Off topic here but...where did you get that seat ?
It is a mostly stock seat. The cover is from Sargent Cycle. Give them a call and they will send you sample swatches of their available colors. You can customize your cover by choosing different colors for different areas. For example, besides changing the color of the piping you could also change the color of the textured vinyl and the smooth vinyl. I just wanted a bit of color to spice the seat up a bit and they had a blue that was pretty close to the lighter blue on the tank and side cover decals. I also cut out a section of the stock foam in the rider area and replaced it with Sargent's Super Cell Atomic Foam. It is much firmer than the stock foam, especially after 20+ years, and is much nicer IMHO.

Thanks,
Joe

Is it a do it yourself kit?

damn it ray !!! You should know to return parts you buy. LOL. Sorry I couldn't resist fanning the fire.

back on topic though. If I run the emgo filters(which I currently have) and my j.c. Whitney mufflers, just how bad will my mix be ? If emgos are that restrictive, wouldn't that be close to an airbox? With the emgos and the stock mufflers it ran great. No popping or pinging. Or is my best bet quality filters and a jet kit?as a side note it ran that good after moving the needle up a notch.

Yes and no....... they will do it for you or you can do it yourself. It isn't hard to do, all you need is a strong stapler. I tried a couple so-called heavy-duty staplers that weren't up to the task. This one was more than adequate for the job. The cover comes with a thin plastic to seal the foam and instructions to install. It helps to have a heat gun (hair dryer would probably work too) to soften the vinyl so it will stretch easier. Jethro put a similar cover on his '83 1100E and was nice enough to take pics and write up a procedure. Bwringer was nice enough to host it for all to see: Jethro's Seat Cover Installation Instructions.

Thanks,
Joe
