So last Monday I got a call from my buddy warren another gsr member, to tell me about a 79 750 that showed up on kijiji. I took a look and found a fairly complete 79, minus the carbs and exhaust listed for $200cdn. I needed a decent tank, and a few other parts for my 79 build so I called the guy up and 6 hours later this showed up at my house

When the guy dropped it off he gave me quite the story. He told me he had purchased the bike the day before at the swap meet. I believed him, since I had actually spotted it at the meet but it was already sold. He said he paid $300 for it, removed the smoothbores and the yosh exhaust for his 1100 and decide to list what was left for $200. He also told me that he was told the internals were all yoshimura. Now, I put this little bit of info in the back of my head ( who would sell a yosh equipped motor for $200? Right) and went on to stripping the bike down for the parts that I needed. Once I had the parts I needed I figured I would crack the motor. Did a compression test, all was good,
but I got a sickly grinding sound from the bottom end when I tried to use the electric starter ( most likely in the starter assembly itself, she is smooth as butter with the kickstart) I figured, what the hell, top end is good, at the very least I'll pull it and shelve it for another build, and then I can dig into the bottom end and find the issue.

what I found amazed me. Ported and polished head, Yoshimura cams, and what appears to be a yoshimura 845cc kit (stock 850 pistons are a very close match to the bore size.) I've tracked the noise down to either a missing thrust washer on the starter reduction gear or the starter itself, either way it's minor.

i can't really find much info on these yoshi components anywhere. I was hoping someone could fill me in, or point me in the right direction

I am thinking the grinding is the starter clutch. Take off the left cover and see if its flopping around. In any case youve got one great built engine there.

Starter clutch may be the problem, I'll have to look deeper into it. These are the pistons, does anyone know where to get gaskets for these? Like I said, best I can tell it's the yosh 845 kit, but I'll have to get a caliper tool to measure it

Holy freakin' score indeed. Those are some sought after rear shocks as well. Sorry don't have any info for the gaskets but I'm sure someone on here will for sure if it's not buried in the search function somewhere.

GSX1000E--Thanks for the tip on the gaskets, I'll look into it in the morning. Funny I was just talking to warren and we were wondering where to get custom gaskets made.

Azr--The guy I got the bike from did mention the shocks, they're still on the bike but I'll be taking them off and listing them in case anyone wants to clean them up for a period bike. They are only attached now so I can roll the frame around, if someone is interested I can swap on an old set.

Hey Great score! I saw that add as well on Kijiji. If you looking at selling those rear shocks let me know, I'd definitely be interested! I'm in Georgetown Ontario so I'm sure we are in a rough proximity.

Your right, I'm not far at all, 20 minutes away right near square one in mississauga. Pm me if you'd like to come see the shocks and we can work something out.

PM sent, I'm new on this site so I believe it went through. Let me know if it didn't.

One of the problems with the Yosh pistons is rings. If your rings are worn you may not be able to find replacements. I searched high and low for the 1085 kit in my 1000 but could not find any. The only option was to send the pistons off and have the grooves recut to accommodate readily available rings. Cost for machining was $40 per piston and the rings were $40 per piston. Getting close to the cost of a newer modern better piston set. In the end I reused the old rings as they were within spec.

That piston you showed looks new though, so my point is not really applicable, just sharing my experience with the old poppy Yosh stuff.

Yours looks like a pretty high compression though.

I will make sure to double check the rings but they look really good. The story went that the bike never really got a chance to be ridden much after the build, the wife took it in the divorce. The guy who bought it from the wife never rode it because he couldn't adjust the clutch once he stripped the screws on the cover ( or maybe the previous guy stripped them, I don't know) but he basically said the clutch wasn't working correctly so he only got on her the one time. Three years later he brought it to the swap meet last week. The pistons weren't quite that clean when they came out, but they cleaned up pretty easy. The last hone of the cylinders is clearly visible. If the entire thing didn't need to be hot tanked to get rid of the horribly poor paint job I'm pretty sure I could just throw it back together with new gaskets. Unfortunately, It looks like someone painted it right after riding through a mud bog.

Not sure what 1100 he can bolt that exhaust on and a set of 29 smooth bores are light as well. If he paid 300 that was a smoking deal for sure. If you know him I have a nice set of gixxer flatslides that came with an 1100E that I had and those 29 would be awesome on my kz I am building. There is a guy in town with the same yosh pistons in his gs and he has been looking for years for the rings so don't screw them up.

Man, you guys are making me nervous lol. To be honest I don't know the guy, and it may have been a 1000 that he had, I was distracted by the bike and the fact that I needed to unload it and get it into the garage before my wife had a chance to see it. I know the exhaust fits, I ended up with the yosh stage 3 that he took off of his bike. Unfortunately I had already promised to grab it off of him for another member before I had a chance to see what it was.

Good info on the Yoshi rings fella's, thanks. I've got two old 750 yoshi engines that I've yet to rip into.

What a score indeed!
Ya buck, we both scored huge. That yosh stage 3 4 into 1 will look nice on my new project. That's the great thing about these bikes. There like a box of chocolates. You never no what your going to get. I ended up going to this guys house that Dan bought the 79 gs750 off of and bought another Yoshi 4 into 1 off him. It's the stage 1, almost identical to the one that is currently on my 77, but it has some slight differences. A little shorter tail pipes and the header pipes are spaced out a little further. Not to mention that there was some pin holes and damage to the bottom of the header. I took it to work and had the welder there weld it up, now I just need to grind down the welds and bring back the shape. I'm hoping it comes out fairly good. Anyways that guy had a 1000 and his plan is to put the 29mm smoothbores "amazing condition" on the 1000 and the yoshi stage 1 from the 79 he sold Dan. I looked at that yoshi stage 1 that came off the 79 and the header was no where near as good of shape as the stage three he sold us, the thing was the can is trashed on the stage 3. For me, that's a simple fix. I'm going to buy a 2.5"x1.5' exhaust pipe. Through so paint on it and it will look sweat. Jeff the guy Dan bought the bike off of is a pretty solid dude, looks like he got what he was looking for and just wanted to flip it quick to get what he had into it and hopefully someone else could do the same. Now Dan and my self benefitted also from that bike and we met another Gs guy that loves these bikes. Dan as far as those rings go, measure up your stock ones from the ones I sold you and compare with the yoshi. You might get lucky and they maybe the same thickness as the OEM 69mm. If they are you can go with the stock ring set. Again not so easy to find though. As you know I'm looking for a set my self. Then again we can buy them from Suzuki for a measly $300 for the complete set. For a set of steel rings. For that price you would think they were made from gold!

I need a quality pair of shocks for a GS 1000 I am building. If yours are for sale...

For now the yosh parts have been shelved. I'll dig in and see what I've got to work with sometime this winter, I'll most likely rebuild that entire motor and throw it in at some point, but I have the wiseco 844 kit in the original motor already so it's not high on the priority list. I'm waiting for the aluminum swinger that I ordered from that guy out in New Brunswick. Right now my priority is dealing with the swing arm and shocks, then I want to get the wheels and brakes worked out.

The shocks are available if anyone needs them, but they are showing their age. These would be better for someone who has a set already and wants parts. I should also mention that I live in Canada. Up here in the "great white north" we're used the the insane shipping charges when something needs to cross the border, I find many of our southern brothers suffer from sticker shock when it comes to shipping south. I live on the outskirts of toronto. I'm basically 2 hours from buffalo, but it would be cheaper for Someone in buffalo to ship a package to Florida and back than from me.
