Secondary gears interchangeable between models?

I'm wondering if early (1980) 850 secondary gears fit into the 1100 cases.

Do all secondary gears accross the G models share the same housing size?

Looking at the part numbers, all 850 1000 1100 have the same drive gear housing but the driven gear housing is different between the 850 and the 1000/1100. Anyone know what this difference is about?

I know the gearing ratio is different between the models and the shaft flange as well but that doesn't matter.

If anyone's got a set of secondary gears of a 1000 or 1100 they could part with I'm interested in buying.

Thanks.

I have no personal experience but have read here that the secondary gears are not interchangeable between the 850 and 1000/1100. It's not a matter of the gear ratio, although that's different as well.

If I remember correctly, they're not interchangable because the gear shaft lengths are different between the 850 and 1100. I suggest that when you find a used set (both gears) make sure the seller includes the entire setup including the housing. That way you won't have to deal with preloading the bearing when you install the shaft into the housing. Also, ask for the flange shims. Cause you may need thicknesses other than your's to achieve the backlash spec.

I'm here to tell you that the 1100 secondary gears don't even swap with OTHER 1100 gears. The gears in my '83 GS1100GK (touring) were ruined by a gear oil leak, and I bought an '82 GS1100G (standard) for parts just for the gears. They aren't the same. The shafts that they go on are different lengths, and the gears have internal splines in a different location (does that make sense?). It all looks the same on the outside, but it ain't on the inside.
I have a local machinist fixin' up the bearing housing on the GK gear so it can be reused, and the parts bike will eventually be a runner since I bought a disassembled GS850 for MORE parts (no frame or engine, just everything else!). I have $500 invested in these 2 bikes + parts now, and
the GK will be ready for the road when I do the paint and striping this week. Yay!

The 850 gears will only fit the 850... I'm supprised the two sets of 1100 gears are different. Or maybe someone tried to replace them before with 850 gears, so without a picture ??

ok, so 850 definitely not interchangeable with 1000/1100.
thanks for that, i was kind of expecting you would confirm my suspision.

neil, are you sure you are talking about the factory setup, not some PO trying to make do with the parts he had?
parts diagrams suggest no difference between any 1000 and any 1100 (incl the GK).

i actually have the GK cases so need to be sure before proceeding with the hunt/purchase
